Volant Cai

I ordered a Volant CAI with powercore filter. I got it for $360 shipped to my door.

So it should be at my house in just a few days.

Is anyone else running a Volant CAI?

If so how was the install?

Any regrets?

I know , I know, Its another CAI thread. Bare with me

I used the search, and I know there are other topics about Volant or CAI's in general.

How's that work with the factory MAF sensor... Be sure to take photos.

Congrats

As far as I know you just change the o-ring (gasket) and use the one provided.

I will take pics of the install and keep time on the total install.

Thanks

not sure your maf will just remove. i think its built into the air box?

HMMMM.

I'll have to look into that.

Anyone here got a Volant for an 09 Sierra?

the maf is screwed in with torx screws, just swaps over to the new intake, last one i did i had trouble gettin to the screws for the airbox lid closest to the fender... oh well enjoy

I thought I read that somewhere.

Thanks.

So how you like the volant?

Here is a pic of the CAI and filter

its a nice looking intake, i installed it on a customers truck, not sure how well it held up he already traded it in 3 months after buying it. i always thought volant was a little pricey but thats just my opinion, i did a drop in green filter and a modular intake tube so it looks practically factory and it was low cost and just as effective i know you can get the super scoop intake duct for the volants i do think that is kinda cool

I started a thread on this a few weeks ago. The '09 GM intake design is different than the '07-'08.

You MUST use the Volant supplied O-ring. It is thinner than the OE and allows the MAF to snap in to the new intake tube.

I had contacted Volant because there were no directions. They sent them to me and I posted them in the last thread.

Since I did the "re-install" the way they said, I had no more issues. I am very happy with the fit and sound of the box. I notice a very slight increase in acceleration, but have not driven enough to test for a mileage difference. I think you will be happy with it.

I have one and it looks good. Thats about it.

so, looks good only? no discernable gains?

I felt about the same way when I had a Volant, but then I upgraded to the AEM Brute Force and actually noticed a small SOTP gain. The AEM Brute Force, followed closely by the K&N FIPK, tested highest for performance gains when Black Bear did a comparison of intakes.

I like how the AEM Brute Force is a dry filter (no oiling that could foul the MAF) and is installed by removing the bottom shelf that holds the stock filter housing in place, meaning it is sucking a huge amount of outside air in from in front of the wheel well.

I don't think the Volant was included in the test that Justin did.

Was the volant included in the test that Justion did?

Yes, there were 5 different intakes tested on a 2006 Silverado SS under comparable conditions (The SSS has a custom Magnaflow and a BlackBear Performance tune) - CLICKY:

-AEM dry flow

-Outlaw Performance

-K&N FIPK

-Volant

-GM PP Intake

In Jenna's own words:

gms/sec is grams of air per second entering the engine.

MAF hz is the frequency the MAF reports. Corresponds with g/sec

IAT F is the intake air temperature in farenheit

MAP is manifold absolute pressure

The K&N (not a drop in) did well, but you need to look at the highest average airflow which is directly related to torque (subsequently HP). You shouldn't just look at the HP numbers on the test. Manifold pressure is a measurement of restriction, the higher the number the less restriction.

Closed Box (ie. Volant, Outlaw) vs. Open Element (ie. AEM, K&N FIPK)

Closed box intakes do better at lower speeds as there won't be as much of a heat soak issue. The open elements use metal shields which absorbs heat (heat soak). The open element intakes drop temperature a lot quicker which in turn creates denser air. The denser air allows for more airflow, which makes more power.

AEM had the highest manifold pressure (vs Volant and K&N FIPK) and the quickest IAT recovery time.
