Help Me Help My Buddy

my buddy has a 00 to 03 gmc rclb 4.3 5 speed truck.

 

there are weeks he has no problem. then it starts, he will jump in and the truck will not crank over and the security light on the dash is on. he has talked to a couple ppl and they told him to rub the door handle, kick the right rear tire and 3 strokes of the antenna and some times it worked. then theres days that it will not do anything. i asked him if it ever ran with the security light on, he thinks it did a couple times.

 

i told him maybe he needs a new key, i think it has the chip in it, idk.

 

 

is there any thing i should tell him to look for, or what might cause this?

We have an S-10 that had the same problem. Tried the new key thing, but the cure came with a $225 part hat fits in the column. It's a security harness that apparently gets tired of being in a tilt wheel and fails. As far as I can remember, it sends the key codes to the computer and when worn sends the wrong packet.

First thing is we should see if any fault codes are stored,but the most common failure back in the day at dealers on these were the ignition switch assemblies did many but usually would set fault codes.This would be the first thing I would try if I had to take a guess.If I remember correctly the switch/harness assembly ran under 100 bucks.

this is a bare bones truck. crank windows, non power locks and no tilt wheel.

 

hes been told to program a new key you have to install it into the drivers door lock. well he has an issue with the lock on the inside and some on the out side. hes going to take the door pannel off today and see what goes on there.

 

1 dealer told him to check all wireing under the dash.
