Engine & Trans Temps

So I finally put in the Shorty JBA headers (ceramic Titanium coated) and now when im driving, the engine temp goes up to 210 within minutes and stays there, before it was up and down between 180 and 210. My usual driving kept my Trans temp around 1435-140, now after the upgrade it goes up to 145-155 depending on what speeds im driving at. Shouldnt the Headers make the engine temp go down? and probablly the same with the trans? Only thing I could think of is that since i already have a CAI and now Headers, all of the heat is going straight to the cats and since they are snugged up next to the trans, they make the temp go up. but that still doesnt explain whats up with the engine.Today is my 2nd day with them on, so i will keep an eye on it and report back my findings. Just odd is what im saying.

It's interesting that you had engine temp fluctuations between 180º and 210º before, anyway. I never noticed a change in engine temp after I added my JBAs, but engine compartment temps, on the other hand, went WAY down.

The exhaust scavenging is greatly improved because of the coating on the headers - directing the heat out of the engine faster - so it is plausible that the cats would get hotter, and in turn, heat up the neighboring transmission housing, but you are still running fairly cool transmission temps (arguably better than before as it is now slightly warmer), so I wouldn't worry about it.

I think if it makes it to 1435 it is going to kill the fluid..... Get some header rap and rap the headers.... Should bring the temp back down.

No need for header wrap - coated headers are cooler in temp than the stock exhaust manifolds. The problem the OP is describing is that because of the header coating, the hot temps are moved downstream to the next bottleneck in the exhaust (i.e., the cats).

I was under the impression that the cats were pretty free flowing to begin with. how long would the Cats last if they are being heated up more than what they were meant to, if they are?

Yes, that is what I was referring to, JBA says not to wrap the coated headers, but its optional on the cheapo SS ones. I got the ceramic ones so that I wouldn't have to wrap them in the first place.

They are free-flowing as far as cats go, but if you've ever seen how much crap is packed into a cat, you'd get the idea pretty quickly as to why they heat up! Gutted cats don't make popping sounds (kind of like heat shields do on stock mufflers) after you run the vehicle because they don't retain much heat.
