Ok so i currently have a 1999 silverado 5.3l z71. I am thinking about buying an engine from my local junk yard for $120 Taking it apart and cleaning it all out and rebuilding anything that needs rebuilt on it. But my question is, What yr models will bolt into my exhisting Truck? And what yr motors do u recomend?!?!? Thanks for any help, i will post pictures as i rebuild it,With a list on how much things cost as i replace it, and "How To's" as soon as i find one!!!!! and for everyone else, maybe this could be a test others would like to see done to know if its worth it or not

(i have rebuilt old flatheads as though my grandpa is a ford guy and we have a 49 f100) lol so ill pretty much be taking it apart as though i did with it and rebuilding it.

06 will bolt in, but some electronics are a little different, so you will need the ECM with the 06 engine.

Anything 99-02 will work.

Most '06's were drive by wire weren't they? All the 99-02's are cable driven. So that would have to be figured out as well.

I just put a 6.0 out of an '06 in my truck, and you're right, 03+ are DBW. The easiest thing to do is just re-use the stock intake manifold/throttle body/fuel rails, since the DBW intake manifolds don't have all of the fittings needed to mount the throttle cable bracket.

Also, since the 99-02s had the return-style fuel rail, you'll need to reuse that. They also had the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, which has a vacuum line running to the intake manifold, and that vacuum fitting isn't there on the DBW manifolds. You can make it work with a little creativity (I did), but it's easiest to just swap over the whole manifold/fuel rail assembly if it's in good condition.

The only other thing I needed to swap over from the old engine to the new, was the oil pressure sensor, but that might not be necessary on all motors.

EDIT: Also, they got rid of the EGR somewhere along the way, so you can either swap it over, or just get it tuned out. If you decide not to run it, you'll have to block off where the EGR goes into the older style manifold.

Also, the 99-02 PCM will work perfectly fine, it just needs to be re-flashed.

Dan, did you get that 6.0 in your truck yet? I remember seeing pictures of it on the stand but nothing about it making it into the truck.... Maybe I just missed it?

Drive by wire is super simple. You get a pedal set from an 03+ and hook it up.

Or like was said...don't use it.

So what would be easier to swap into a 99-02, a LQ9 or LQ4?

Whatever you find first, for less money.
