Adding Steering Controls To 2006 2500 Wt

Recommended Posts

Ok, getting back to the project,

I picked up a steering column from an 2006 2500 truck, same year as mine. I check the PN on the steering wheel to confirm it is the correct part.

The Air bag has been removed, and I will use the air bag from my truck, assuming the colors match. The truck is currently at the dealer so won't know till I pick it up this weekend or next.

Any suggestions or tips to simplify the procedure and keep from making any mistakes. I am guessing I need to do the following, but I am sure there are other impoertant steps.

Disconnect the battery to keep from seeting an error or deploying

Have the wheels straight before taking the steering wheel off.

Also does anyone know if the 2006 factory radios are XM ready?

Thanks

Steve

Ours are similar except the airbag itself. Read my install and notes:

Yes, the 2006 factory radios are both XM and Sirius ready. I use a SIR GM1 module hooked into the factory radio and I get sirius directly into the radio and control it with my steering wheel buttons

no problem...one day (when i get off my lazy butt), I will disassemble the whole thing and do better pics (I have other stuff I want to install as well).

For the CD player does it matter if the unit is for a Bose setup? Not sure what speaker setup I plan to go with. Would it make sence to go w/ a Bose setup or something else and would one or the other be a bigger headache to install?

Thanks

Steve

Any idea what part number or numbers would work w/ 2006 2500 hd WT?

For the XM/Sirius Satellite radio? Either should work with the Bose version as well as the steering wheel controls. I tend to stay away from Bose because of my view of them (Inferior quality at the end of the day). One of three ways you can do it:

Install a factory head unit with an aftermarket amp with line in inputs. I would recommend the Alpine PDX-5 (http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-PDX-5-Amplifi...l/dp/B0016AJS5Q) since it has 4 channels and a sub all built into one. Match the door speakers with the output of the amp.

Install an aftermarket head unit with an adapter for the steering wheel controls....

Find a donor truck/suv and take all of its guts for the audio system. Reprogramming of the factory HU will be required.

Thanks,

I did not know if there was a XM head unit that was specific to BOSE, and would not work w/o the whole speaker and amp setup. Since it is a double din unit, I prefer to stay w/ the OEM, I don't like alot of the aftermarket ones, except for the high end NAV units. Since the truck is mostly used as a tow vehicle I can't justify the expense. I have an XM subscription w/ a XM recorder that I can remove the mini tuner and use in a cradle that I can feed XM into the truck or car w/ the same liscence. Also will be able to use factory controls.

Although It looks to be more work than I though to remove the steering wheel and clock spring, I may wait to find a dash harness and change it at the same time, so when I am ready to start adding power windows and locks, I will have the harness already there. Dont want to have to remove all the same stuff twice.

I would like to get a game plan, and start sourcing the parts.

Thanks again

Steve
