Just Finished Replacing My Heads.

So my daughter's Tahoe (05) had the castec heads and were leaking anti-freeze. Of course, it had over 100k (111,000), so no warrantly. I got some remanufactured ones for about $400 for the set. In addition, I pulled the oil pan and cleaned it. It had about 1/2" of sludge in it and the pick-up tube had sludge in it. (Lucky the oil was still moving).

While I was down there, pulled the tranny cover and changed the fluid/filter. Also replaced the rear knock sensor because it was starting to corrode and one just went bad in my son's truck and also put some rtv around the plug. Of course, it got new spark plugs, wires, air filter, radiator hoses, thermostat, belts. I cleaned most everything I could, including the intake/throttle body. Put it all back together and cranked it up last night. Man, it runs and drives good. Should be set for another 100k.

Lucky kids!

Ha-ha-ha. That's the truth. And I just replaced the rear seals and brakes in my son's truck while he was in boot camp. I told them I want a nice Snap-On torque wrench for my work. LOL

So the sludge in the oil was caused by the heads leaking?

From what I understand, the dex-cool anti-freeze mixing with oil makes a black sludge, versus the chocolate/light brown mess of regular anti-freeze. Several people on here were saying that.

Makes sense. Thanks for your reply.
