Shopping For 6.2l, Need Some Input

I am looking into buying a new 6.2L extended cab GMC. I had a 2007 Chevy crew Z71 with a Vortec Max and loved it, but had to get rid of it about a year ago. I am now in a position to buy a new one and I am not sure what to get. I have a few questions:

I LOVED the Vortec Max, and got decent mileage out of it. Has the 6.2 been OK on mileage?

Is the 6.2L 6spd. combination way better than the Vortec Max with the 4-spd. auto?

Do you get the rear discs if you don't order the Max trailering package with the 6.2?

I don't tow real heavy (about 6k max) and mostly this will be a daily driver. Is the 3.42 or the 3.73 a better choice?

Similar if not better mileage depending on what gears you get.

Thats debatable in my opinion. The 4-speed is WAY smoother than the 6-speed intown, just shifts all the time. If you test drive one, you'll see what I mean. You go thru gears like crazy. As far as towing goes, that simple, you've got 2 extra gears where you didn't before, so towing it should/is way better than the 4-speed you were use to.

If the truck has stability track, you get the disks, otherwise, you get drum from how I understand it.

Personally, I've driven both trucks (3.42 and 3.73's) and I don't like the 3.42's. Just feels heavy. Even with the exta ponys' and 6-speed, it lags IMO. The 3.73's feel much better driving.

I've been considering a swap myself to the 6.2 so I've driven about a dozen now. Still can't pull the trigger. Having my new BB tune, even makes it harder.

Good luck with your search,...

I had a 2007 VMax, and recently upgraded to 2010 6.2L, factory ordered. I am VERY happy with the 6.2, 6 speed, 3.73 combo. It has a lot more get up and go, and with the extra gears, it's a whole different animal from my '07. I had always thought the '07 was just lacking "go". I had considered a tune but it was leased, so I never. So far i don't see a need for a tune on the 6.2L

I pull a boat in the mountains and I think this is going make a big differnece. Also the manual shifting ability, will help stay in the right gear if needed, if the tow mode doesn't cut it in the mountains.

Gas mileage, well I have only had it a few weeks, it's still thirsty..... I do notice when cruising in traffic it's barely reving, yet step on it a bit and it goes.

My '07 was a Dec 06 build new style truck, and quality was good. This 2010 is built very well, even the paint is thicker, I gave it a good wax already and it is pretty nice.

I have been running 91 octane also as stated in the manual.

If you haven't driven a 2010 with 6.2L yet, do yourself a favor and take one for a ride, if you can find one on a lot, but be prepared to like it and want one. Don't be afraid to factory order and get it they way you want also.

Good luck!

Doug
