Highway Drone With Magnaflow

Well wouldn't you just know it I just got a 14inch Magnaflow installed a few days ago after having a really bad expierence about a year ago with a flowmaster 40. I loved the Magnaflow around town but today I drove over 120 miles on the highway and the drone was really getting to me after awhile. Last time this happened with the flowmaster I just resorted to putting the stock muffler back on. However I'd really like to keep this Magnaflow if I could.

I searched around and found that rotating the muffler 90 degrees so that the oval is in the "vertical" position rather than horizontal might help. Also I noticed people have said to put a resonator in front of the muffler but I couldn't find any part numbers.

Any help or advice would be apprieciated.

I have a Flowmaster 44 and the drone doesn't bother me at all...You are going to get "drone" from any high flow muffler, a resonator will calm it a little, but you will always have a fair level of drone. BTW the Magnaflow is the muffler with the least amount of drone on the highway...I have a few friends with them and I cannot hear a 10th of what my exhaust is like on the highway. Ever thing its vibration and not drone.

I think your best bet would be an exhaust cut out, one side with a stock muffler on it for highway and a Magnaflow on the other side for driving around town...Or stick with the stock exhaust.

It had a fairly big resonator on it and I left that and swapped the stock muffler with a flowmaster 40. I loved the way it turned out and it had very little if any highway drone. I have been trying to find somewhat similar of a sound for my truck but its not happening.

No way in hell will you get a similar sound from a V8 man....you are putting out 1400CC worth more of air per revolution, and 2 more exhaust pulses.

Also, a car has a whole lot more interior right over the exhaust...you have an empty box now.

You could pull all your carpet seats etc and cover your interior with Dynamat...or equivalent. That will stop the drone.

Hmm your right about the interior directly over the exhaust. I never really thought of that. Ya I could dynomat it but I really don't wanna spend the money on that. I'm probably going to just put the stocker back on and just lave it be.

You could try a resonated tip.

At worst it doesn't work, it will still help with the sound of your stock exhaust.

Why don't you try to put the muffler back towards the rear axle as far as you can. It might reduce the drone some. I did that to my truck and the drone is tolerable.

Yeah, but he has a Magnaflow...they're not exactly known for drone...

He wants a quiet exhaust inside and loud outside with none or next to no drone.

The Corsa is definitely the way to go for the lowest amount of drone...but its not exactly cheap.

Magnaflows are actually quite well known for their drone potential in certain RPM ranges. Corsa is anyone's best bet for no drone.

Got a Flowmaster 50 on mine. No drone. I spoke with the Flowmaster rep and he highly recommended the 50 over the 40 because it is a 3 chamber design vs. the 40 which is a 2 chamber design.

Pretty darn satisfied with my setup so far.

I think the biggest thing here is everyone's definition of drone.

I have a Flowmaster Super44...its loud...and most people say it drones like a bastard....I have no issue with it...nor does my wife. Yeah, its loud in the cab...but now where near intolerable for my likings.

I have been in many trucks with magnaflow....and none of them make a sound even remotely close to that of my 44... Now I don't have AFM obviously, so a truck with that may sound like hell....I haven't been in one yet.

The OP has tried a couple exhausts now....and telling him to go out and spend the cost of a Corsa to try it out is not exactly what I would want to hear. He's better off going to stock for the few bucks it costs than losing 200 or 300 bucks buying installing and than having to remove a Corsa.

I mean, a performance exhaust is going to be louder inside and out...maybe its the sound level inside on the highway that bothers him...and not drone at all.

Now, if he can find someone with a truck like his with various exhausts on them, and ride in them on the highway...than that would be my fave option. You may just not like the sound of anything on the highway.

I like Glasspaks on the highway...even they don't drone bad enough for me....but that's personal preference.
