94 Burban Rear End Whine

Question

Posted

She has a few miles- 275k overall, about 150k on the rear end. The shop that set it up let it go with a whine, and I just got this handed down from my Dad and thought I would tear into it if it wasn't too tricky. Maybe some high dollar synthetic for the whine, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Thanks, bruce

Alot of the time a whine will be caused by improper torque on the pinion nut ... but usually that will come and go, depending on whether your accelerating or decelerating. A little Amsoil, or your synthetic of choice in the diff wouldn't hurt any. Could drop the shaft at the pinion & check for play, or difficulty in turning with wheels off the ground, & drums removed (if it has drums). Other than that, if she's got 150K on her, I say just run it.
