Light Duty 2500

I pull a camper so I wanted a truck that could get the job done, I found a 2000 2500 whick still had the original sticker, It had all the stuff, heavy duty cooling system, oil cooler, trans cooler, extra capacity chassis.. so I bought it and much to my surprise its a light duty 2500. What? how is it consider light duty with all the heavy duty options? GVR is 7200lbs. what is the difference between light and heavy duty 2500, I dont see how my truck can be anymore heavy duty than it is... Also has heavy duty shocks and springs..

The drive line is the same, but the frame isn't. Your truck is basically a 1500 with the 2500 suspension, axles and transmission.

As long as you don't exceed the 7200 GVW then you will be alright.

I just bought an '01 2500LD, but the GVW is 8600. I wonder what the difference is. They only put the 6.0 in the 2500LD I believe, as well as 4.10 gears?

No, the 6.0 and 4:10's came standard on 2500HD's for the 03-07 generation. After 2000, the 2500's got bigger frames, ruffly 2-3" taller from what I read. This is when GM started refering to them as "Heavy Duty Trucks". Also the 496 ci engine "8.1" was introduced to HD trucks after 2000.

Some of the 'heavy duty' differences include:

My 1997 is a LD2500 ... GVW 7200 lbs while the regular 2500 for 1997 has GVW 8600 lbs

My truck still has the 4L60E transmission while the regular 2500 has the 4L80E

My truck has 6-bolt rims while the regular 2500 has 8-bolt rims

The axles are different too... but I don't know the specifics

Your 2000 may have the same specs and equipment ... I am not sure

It is a nice package for a truck that will be used to tow a travel trailer... most of us don't need a 2500HD

I have the 4L80-transmission with 3.73 gears also with 6.0 plus you mention the height, my truck sits higher, most think it 4 wheel drive. my truck was made late 2000 because it has the 4-doors while earlier trucks came with only 3 doors. has Z85 code which is increase capacity chassis with 8 lug rims..

I thought the early 2000 LD's were only available as an excab short bed or reg cab long bed and had the same GVW as the 1500 HD's. The reg cab longbed was the more rare version. Also they were the only 2500 series trucks that were available with 2-tone paint.

Mine is the extended cab but with the 4 doors, this was the first year they were offered but it was not availible until late 2000, Im just confused by the numbers and low GVR,, by all indications it should be a heavy duty not light duty

I had the exact same truck in 2000 - had to wait months and months to get one with the four doors. Again it comes down to the frame - it is a 1500 frame, not the HD 2500 frame that GM started to use in 2001. I was really bummed that I had waited all that time, only to find out if I had waited another couple of months I could have had a 2001 2500HD with the increased GVWR. I had all the "heavy duty" options - 8 lug wheels, Z-85, etc., as well. If you compare your truck to a later model HD you will see the difference, however.

It's still a good truck, but the number is the number...

If it has a 1500 chassis then why is it called a 2500? What makes a truck a 2500 and another a 1500?

Let me re-state and hopefully clarify - in 2000, GM 1500 and 2500 trucks shared the same basic frame. The difference in the suspension (heavier springs), axles (10.5 vs. 9.5), and other factors caused the 2500 to have significantly higher GVRW of 7200lbs (EC LWD 2WD) than the same model 1500 with a GVWR of 6200lbs. That's why one truck is called a 2500 and the other a 1500.

In 2001, GM started building the 2500 HD series, which used a heavier frame that was shared by the 2500 HD and 3500 series. Because of the redesign, the GVWR went from 7200 to 9,200, so there was quite a jump.

All this still doesn't mean you have a bad truck. I loaded a 9.5 Lance in mine - which was a 4WD - installed a set of airbags and good shocks, and had no problems what so ever until I made the jump to a Duramax in 2004. It was at the top end of the GVWR, but I drove about 50,000 miles with that combo and life was good. So unless your camper puts you over the GVWR of your truck - don't worry about it and just enjoy!

I worded that wrong. what i meant was, the 6.0 was the only engine for the 2500LD., and I thought 4.10's were the only gears available in the 2500LD.

I know for the 03-07 generation 2500HD's that 4:10's came standard on the 2500HD's, today is a different stroy with current gen trucks as they now have 6 speeds and come standard with 3:73's, 4:10's on current gen truck is an option, as are a higher gear I beleive that is offered. I would never go back to a 3:73 rear in a 2500HD, as I really like the difference that 4:10's make pulling.

Getting back to the older trucks from the 90's, the 3/4 ton trucks from the big 3 all had a similar stance, and you can really notice it with the front. The clearence in the front wells looked very crammed and uneven cause of a different frame, which was explained above. The big 3 simply took a 1500 frame and built it up with more HD parts, to make it a 3/4 ton truck. I think it was dodge who started using a bigger frame on their HD trucks first, then GM, then Ford. I always thought the 3/4 trucks of the 90's looked uneven with the front wheel wells. I know if I were to install my 8.0 ft western pro plus plow on one of my older 90's 3/4 ton trucks I had, it would have never handled it like my 03 2500HD does. The smaller frames limited you on what size plow you could use on the older 3/4 tons. This is also why GM's 2500HD for a time was not ven in same class as Ford's F250, cause Ford was still using a smaller frame, so it would take an F350 at this time to be in GM's 2500HD's class.

In conclusion, if you have a 2000 or older 2500 truck, it is more then capable to pull and plow snow, just doesn't have the higher GVW as the trucks with the bigger frames do.

I have a 1999 2500 3 door. It has 8 lug wheels, 6.0 and 3.73 gears & the best seats in the business. It's not built on the diesel frame but has lots of HD pieces. The 4.10 option gives more tow capacity, but I do alright pulling 5th wheel.

Now if I could better than 5 mpg.....
