Truck Topper- Which Brand?

Recommended Posts

I plan on getting a topper for the new '10 Silverado CC Z71 we are picking up tomorrow, and would like some feedback on which brand PLEASE?

Century, or Leer (A.R.E. and Jason are at the bottom as far as the "Better Half's opinion. I am not crazy about Jason myself)???? I had a dealer tell me today that they stopped carrying Leer toppers due to warranty issues. He didn't elaborate any more, but has anyone heard anything about this?

I know there are a few other brands out there, but also know some only have a short warranty on the "structure", up to 5 years MAYBE. We plan on keeping this new toy for a long time, so we want a Lifetime structure warranty.

Thank you!

Chris

ps: I tried a search, but didn't come up with much!

I've owned A.R.E Z-series... Very hard to beat in my opinion...

Fits like a glove!

Everyone has their own preferance and compare the standard vs options the upper end ones usually are the better choice. Im not saying one is better than the other, im just going off of what i have been told.

I was looking for one before i went to Afghanistan (which happens to be where i am now). After going through about 5 or 6 different dealers TN, KY, MO, TX and NM, the two that seem to be on the better ended, less problems list are Lund and ARE. All of the dealers i had talked to were in business between 20 and 35 years and had went thru alot of different companies and dropped their products because of warranty issues. But the resounding answer was in the past 10-15 years with fiberglass coming along as it has they are building better products. Two of the dealers that sold both Lund and ARE said they prefer was Lund over the ARE because they have never had a warranty issue with lund, one said they have had 2 replaced by lund over about the last 10 years and when they did replace their topper, it was with an upgraded version. BTW, the ARE cost more with them comparing the same options so it wasn't about the price(usually within 100 though). Im sure that some have had the opposite of that happen, im just stating what i have found out by looking for one. Make sure if you do decide to post a pic and like anything else right now, you can get them down in price, if they say no, just go elsewhere and make dealers work against each other unless you just like to pay more....if thats the case, imma need about $35 for this reply.

Thank you guys!

Well it ended up being between the Leer, and the Century, and the Century came out ahead. Did get a little off.

We were going to go with an upper model, but having dogs that ride in the bed once in a while, it was highly suggested to have the 50/50 slider side windows. And when we were told it is about $700.00 to replace the rear frameless window if it breaks, we ended up getting the Ultra cab high model for that reason.

Should be in 2-3 weeks. We hope before our trip "Up North" over July 4th.

Will post some pictures when it comes in, and the truck is clean again!

Wingnut,

Not sure how the bedrug would work with the spray in liner. But it is a great idea. We don't usually take them with us except to the Vet, or Petsmart/Petco.

We ordered the topper June 1, and it came in today!!!!! I can't believe it is in already. It is being installed Saturday morning. Either Century is slow right now, or they have a great system in place! Lol

We have a "Fun Filled W/E" planned. Have some landscaping to do. OH JOY!!!!!! If time allows I will try to clean up the truck, and post some pictures!

My guess is the only thing that might interfere with a Bedrug over a spray-in liner would be if the velcro wouldn't stick to the spray-in.

Congrats though! :rollin:

    • The LCA bolts are NOT a one time use fastener.  GM does not have them called out as such at all.   They are torque plus degree, but not a one time use TTY.  Nowhere in the service manual does it call out for replacing the LCA bolts for being one time use.  The factory spec would apply to the Moog bolts as well.    I see two things different.  The Moog bolts are greaseable (which I see no point in) and they don't have one of the washers welded to the bolt like the factory bolts, so they can be used in all 4 positions.      Think about it.  The LCA bolts are now the alignment adjustment point, instead of the UCA bolts like the prior generation.  A bolt that is meant to be adjusted for alignment...would it make sense to make it a one time use component?  How would you get an alignment done in the first place?  You couldn't.       Also.  What TSB exactly?  There is no TSB that I see for 2019-2026 for over-torquing LCA bolts.  There was a PI, PIT5533C, but that covered 2014-2018 body trucks for re-torquing LCA mounting bolts.  But those trucks to a 2019-2026?  Not the same, so PIT5533C does not apply.
    • Nice looking setup!  Is this the kit you got?  If so 211 is a great deal!  https://accessories.chevrolet.com/product/trailering-camera-system-86584184   My TT came with a wireless rear camera but it only works on an app or a separate screen they sell so I've decide it's not worth the hassle since it keeps disconnecting and with wireless android auto it's a hassle trying to connect my phone to it.  So I've been thinking about adding the GM camera so it's integrated into the rest of the camera views.   I also found this one which seems to be a different PN & retail price that explicitly states the invisible trailer view https://www.shopchevyparts.com/chevrolet/2024/silverado-2500-hd/electronics/85825715-silverado-2500-trailer-camera-transparent-view-requires-trg-camera-provisions-p-92326971.html?sort=2a
    • You didn't say what year it is. I have a '17 5.3 6l80e & used the Range AFM delete for a while to stay in V8 mode. Then I got a local tuner to preform a HPTune on my 6l80e & love it. He did a AFM delete, torque matching between engine & transmission, removed converter slip and mild engine tune that helps the transmission. Gears shift better, at specific speeds, no hunting for gear, no 2 gear down shifts, no spark plug miss feel. Drives like a different truck. I highly recommend it.
    • I know this old thread but I just replaced the left side engine mount on my 2018 5.3 2wd and it was a pain. A quick search showed that it was probably going to cost around $600 to $900 to get it replaced. I researched how to replace it and decided to do it myself being that I'm retired and have the time and tools. What should have taken a day took me 4 days plus a couple trips to my chiropractor and some blood. Why a mount failed at 150k miles is beyond me but such is life.   Peace
