8.1 Basic Mods

Hey guys, I have a 2002 Silverado 2500 HD, Crew Cab/Long Bed. I was just wondering what the best intake/exhaust and other basic mods you guys would recommend. I got it new in 2002 and it is completely stock with 55,3XX miles. Never had a problem with anything on it at all, but the mod bug has recently come knocking. I'm experienced with LS1/LT1/L67, but I'm no expert when it comes to the 8.1. From the research I've done, there's not THAT many parts for the 8.1, and the ones I've read about all have many negative reviews citing little to no power gain at all. I was just hoping someone experienced with the 8.1 power plant could maybe give me some recommendations on an intake/exhaust setup that could give me relatively good power gains. Links and any information would be appreciaed! Thanks in advance.

Its already got all the intake and exhaust you'll need........for now. I'd be hitting up a tune first, then exhaust, and then the intake. :happysad: In order of most to least restriction.

youll get opposite opinions in hear about the same items..

simple math will tell you more air in and more air out faster will make more power and have the engine more effecient i bilieve and run smoother..

do a k&n intake and replace your oem muffler with any from the aftermarket youll be very pleased.then get a blackbear tune

You know I was starting to like your opinions and how you were defending the K&n for all of us fipk people. Then you come over here and tell the guy the opposite of what I said, and what I said is 100% true. He should get the fipk, but after he gets the tune and the exhaust. The tune definitely comes first, IMO. Changing the stock airbox won't hardly give you anymore power, just more noise. An exhaust will give you more power than a k&n. But the tune will give you the most bang for the buck.

No i agree with you itsjust some guys say an intake is a waist of time and shows NO improvment and i disagree. any truck i put a cai on showed an improvent, i know its not gonna take you from a 16 sec 1/4 to a 12.4... but there work well. and regardless when you do what YOUR CORRECT tune..exhaust..and intake. he will be very happy

I agree with you, so many are quick to bash K&N and say that it doesn't flow any better than stock and it doesn't filter worth a damn. I have a K&N and have for 80,000 miles and hven't had one problem with it, I clean it about every 20,000 miles drive it a while then clean the maf. K&N ftw! :happysad:

thanks guys, i appreciate the help. Now are you guys talking about a drop in k&N filter or the whole intake kit with cone filter? (Sorry for the naive question, just see alot of people with stock airbox with aftermarket bellow). And what are the specifics on the blackbear tune? Thanks for the replies guys.

On the K&N, we're talking bout' the whole kit. But do the blackbear(or most any tune) tune first, it will allow the engine to come unleashed from the stock computer limits, then you can mod it from there. Most trucks can't even do a burnout before they get tuned. The tune will do everything from removing your speed limiter, changing trans. pressure for better shifts, increasing timing for more efficiency, increasing fuel flow at high throttle, remove egr, and much more. It's like doing a ton of mods at once! :happysad:

correct me if im wrong but shouldnt you do the CAI before the blackbear tune so that justin can make changes to the computer to account for the higher air flow?

When i asked them (blackbear) about a 180 stat they said to wait for the tune the change it..

not sure if its the same with other mods, i dont know if the tune tells the computer about intake or exhaust
