Oil Changes

Recommended Posts

I have a little shy of 200 miles on my new truck and was wondering what you guys were using for motor oil. I really want to go the synthetic route for the fact that oil changes aren't so often and for better protection. Are there any downsides to this? Also, what oil does the general consensus recommend? TIA

Also, at what mileage should I change the "break in" oil from the factory? I have always heard either 500 or 1000 miles?....

Well, most will tell ya 1000 miles before swapping over to Synthetics... but I did mine at 500 and went with Mobil 1

If it's good enough for the Z06, it's good enough for my truck...

The only advantage I see is oil change intervals. I'd go with a reputable company like Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline. I have never used synthetic but I am usually a Castrol man myself. Their dino shit is pretty good.

Stevens07, that is exactly my standpoint on it. I am taking a trip this weekend, and will most likely miss the 500mile mark for an oil change. I guess it won't hurt to take it to 1000 miles before I throw some Mobil 1 in it. The wife will have a heart attack on the price, but I will rest easy at night because I sprung for good oil!

Willshire, the intervals are the second best feature to me on the synthetic. The first would be their protection qualities.

There is no brake in oil from the factory. Its just conventional 5W30. Most people will change early to get any contaminants out from the manufacturing process...but there is not nearly as much in there as in years past. The manufacturing processes have improved a great deal.

Oils have improved by leaps and bounds in the last few years. Conventional or synthetic work well. Just get a name brand API SM ILSAC GF approved oil.

There is no magic oil. They all will keep the engine running for a very long time if changed regularly with a good filter.

I feed mine a steady diet of Penzoil Platinum and Purolator PurOne filters. Change it when the OLM says to which is around 8k +/-, no worries. I have heard many change the oil after the first 1000 mi on a new engine but I doubt GM thinks it is necessary.

mobil one dino here, i change my oil every 3k so synthetic would be a waste for me....dino and synthetic both offer the same quality of protection, just dino dosen't last as long as synthetic as far as oil change intervals

+1

For 95% of us, conventional oil will be just fine...
