Question For You Line-x Owners...

Has anyone ever removed the OEM tailgate cap and had them put the Line-X in it's place?

 

I see a few people have done "over the rails." I am thinking of going that way, but, would like the tailgate to match the sides and was thinking of maybe trying this. It would be nice if I could see some pics from someone who may have already done this though...

Yes, but most people don't do this, as there are holes under the plastic thing that's there. No, I don't recommend it.

So, are there just empty holes with no screws/bolts in them? On the 2500HD it doesn't look like there could be actually. It runs right along the edge of the inside and then comes down about three inches over the back/outside. It seems strange that they would put holes there, but, then again, they did include a "free" cap. Must have been for a reason.

I have a 2500HD with Line-X over the rails but kept my factory tail gate cap. It looks factory next to other trucks.

And now my 2 cents...I have had 3 trucks with bed liners instead of a spray liner because I was concerned about having them put a grinder to my new bed paint and also concerned about denting the inside of my bed as bed liners absorb blows. I gave in and had the Line-X spayed in and to all I highly recommend it. It looks clean and I dont need to worry anymore about warping, hollow banging when you walk on it or crap sliding around.

The holes are there, because they use the same tailgate on the 1500 and if you look they have screws holding them on. If you insist, take your tailgate cap off, you'll see the ugly holes i'm talking about.

i have had the Line-x in two trucks, just awesome. IMO, i would also get them to spray the inside of the rear wheel wells.

I say go for it... if there are holes underneath just sand them and put a little bondo in them then have them linex over them

The holes are big and ugly. I bought an aftermarket black diamond plate tailgate cap a while back that I was really excited to install. I had it at the dealer for service and told them to put on. My buddy is the service manager and he came out and said you need to look at this. When he showed me the holes would be exposed I said no way. He told me people have filled them in with different materials and painted them before but it looks like crap. You could do this and line-x over them but they are pretty far down from the top of the tailgate and it would look wierd (IMO). They don't usually line-x that far down on the tailgate cap. I have it done on my 94' but there are no holes from a tailgate cap.

Exactly, I've been trying to tell them that on a 2500 there's no threads in the holes and they're like 3/8 in. big.

I got a pro-cap put on because I was getting a canopy, why would they put a wing on the tailgate to begin with?!

 

BTW I got the over-rail Linex is the best, minus the advertisement they leave on your truck..
