2500 3500 Stearing Colum Noise...?

i work in gold mine camp up in alaska and am a sole mechanic with a fleet of 20, 03-07 2500 and 3500 chevy and gmc duramax trucks.

these trucks get the shit beat out of them constantly and change ball joint, tie rods wheel bearings and cv shafts just about daily..

 

on just about every truck theres a noise coming from inside the stearing coloum, it sounds like a stearing linkage but have checked em all and they are all good. i dont have time to rip everything apart and am wondering if anyone has ran into this problem before. it must be something that is frequently changed as every truck is doing it...

My 2006 3/4 ton had the same problem, and come to find out this was a common problem with many of these trucks from around this time. The problem is probably the intermediate steering shaft. GM makes a lube kit for it that is a temporary fix, but from what I understand it will eventually do it again and is a pain to do. Luckily mine was under warranty and was fixed at the dealership with a new shaft from GM that solved the problem. Other than the annoying rattling feel when you hit bumps I guess there is no real problem with just leaving it though. If you type in GM truck intermediate steering shaft problem on any search engine you will find others complaining about this same problem. That's how I found out it was a common issue. Yep ISS and/or the plastic bearing at the bottom of the column. Just search the site for "intermediate steering shaft", you'll have plenty to read
