Fuel Pump

Well our fuel pump went out this weekend....at least that's what I think it is.  Seems like a couple things happened all at once.  First we're driving on the freeway and we get a sudden loss of power...gassed it and all that happened were the RPM kept flying up.  We pulled over, checked a few things under the hood then took off.  The take off was really sluggish and shaky.  A minute later (while back on the freeway) the check engine light came on and we died.  If you turn on the key you don't hear the whine to the fuel pump.  Also, we noticed that when you turn the truck off the oil pressure guage goes back up to about 20.  It's never done this before.  It always drops to 0.  By the time it was towed to the mechanics and sat for a minute, we noticed a leak under the truck.  

 

We also have our 83 scottsdale in the shop for the last 4 months getting a crate motor (we told the mechanic to take his time).  This was supposed to be done last friday...however on tuesday once the motor was in and bolted down, they noticed the wrong flywheel got put on!  Out came the engine again...So we got 3 trucks and all of them are down.   When it rains it pours....

 

So back to my original point...where is the fuel pump located & how hard is it to replace?

Should be in the tank. You will have to drop the tank to replace

The pump is in the tank. If I remember corretcly, you have a 97 (without looking at your sig) and I have a brand new fuel pump for you cheap.

 

Let me know if you want it.

Or remove the bed.  Sounds kind of crazy, but I've read where a guy did it both ways and he said removing the bed was a lot easier.  If you think about it, only a few bolts going into the bed, the fuel filler hose, and maybe some elecrtical wires that need to be disconnected.  If you got a place to set the bed (a couple sturdy saw horses or something) and some extra bodies to lift it off, it just might be worth trying.

me and my dad dropped his tank to replace something (some sensor or something) and it was a PITA especially since it is an S-10 and sits so low to the ground (even jacked up)

Had a friend with a 96 Burb that had the same problem.  It turned out to be the sending unit in the tank and not the fuel pump.  We put in 2 fuel pumps before we realized it.  You can have local garage/dealer do a "jumper wire" check to see if the pump is working first.  The pump ran us about $90 but the sending unit is more expensive.  First thing I'd do is put a new in line fuel filter in (driver's side on the frame rail) and go from there.  Could be a clogged filter, fuel pump, or sending unit.

Good idea!  Is the fuel pump internally regulated?  If it is, it might sense line pressure from a clogged fuel pump and turn off!

Thanks for the other idea's.  I will make sure my mechanic checks all those items.
