Rear Axle Swap Question

Need to replace the rear axle on my 1995 K1500. It's the 6 lug with 3.42 gearing. I believe it's the GU 6 option. I'd like to replace it with a light 3/4 ton axle. Wondering, if it has the GU 6 option, is this a straight across bolt up and secondly will the 4X4 and 4X2 versions both work if option is the same. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ... some issues to think about..

 

- yes, the 3.42 gears are the GU6 option

- most/many (...but not all) of the 3/4Ton light duty trucks (GVW 7200lbs) built in that generation had 3.73 rear axles (GT4)

- a 2wd axle from a C2500 will be about 2 to 3 inches shorter/narrower than the 4wd (K2500) axle

- you will need to have the same gear ratios in the front end and the rear end for your 4 wheel drive to work.
