What Happens When A Transfer Case Grenades Itself?

I have a 2001 Silverado Z71 5.3L with a NVG246 (AutoTrac) Transfer Case.

I have 2 questions.

1. What happens when the Transfer Case suffers catastrophic failure aka grenades itself?

2. Will it cause failure elsewhere in the powertrain as a result….ex. driveshaft, transmission etc?

I appreciate any help or knowledge you can give me!

Depends, sometimes it can blow a transmission because the gears bind and stop the tranny so fast but the engine is still going, but generally it doesn't take out a diff. That's usually the other way around, if a diff goes, a tranny or a case usually goes as well, especially if it goes under moderate to heavy acceleration.

I would also be worried about WHY it grenaded in the first place.
