Trouble Getting Large Tires

If you bleive this. I am trying to get somebody at sears to put 285's on my truck and he is saying that he has to "research it first" to see if its safe. If he cant find anything on that he will not sell me the tires. Has anybody had this happen to them before? He was even evading me when i asked him for the price of the tires without install so i can have it doen by somebody else. I think he is goiung to deny me the tires because he dosent think its safe. Thats a good one. THey are taking this liabilty thing a little further than i thought they would.

I had a little trouble getting mine.  The guy behind the counter was like we have done a few for the gmc dealer next door.  The installer called me in and said you think these are gonna fit (they looked huge before on the rims).  I said put em on and we will see.  

 

Id take my business elsewhere.

Im already calling around for pricing and availability. I kinda understand put i already told him that i am in touch with a lot of people who already have done the 285 tire thing and they say it works great. He wouldnt listen. I just remebered that he is the son of a warehouse guy we had to fire a while ago and maybe he recognizes the work phone number and is mesing with me. WHo knows.

Before I had my lift, I had 285 75x16 on a 9 inch wide wheel, and I had to trim a little, but not very much.  They fit fine and looked WAY better than stock! No torsion bar adjustments are needed. The bigger the tires, the safer I think!!!!!

im putting the BFG Ko 285/75/R16 on my stock rims.

THey are quoting me $747 for 4 tires.

The Guy called me back and said that he would put them on but i wuld have to sign off that i would go and have my truck re-aligned and they wouldnt be liable if the tire blew up or something or i could bring in just my rims and they would put them on the rims and that would also absolve them from any liability. And get this. He doesnt even have them in stock.

DUh. i think i am done with sears and their tire dept.

I got mine at Sears back in May with no problems at all (on the stock rims also).  Purchased, installed, and an alignment done there.  The had them in stock also.  I'd check around a little first before I signed that waiver.

I just realized this was in the HD forum and you had an HD with the Duramax/Allison combo.  The stock wheels are narrower than on the 1500 I think.  I'm wanting to say 6.5 inches on the 2500's vs. 7 inches for the aluminum ones like mine.  Not positive, but I think that's right.  Maybe some of the others with 2500's can help more.

 

I've also heard of a TSB that says something about the warranty being voided if larger tires are used with the Duramax/Alli combo.  You may want to check into this further to make sure.  I've heard about it, but since I don't have that combo, I havn't researched it.

I had my 285 Cooper's put on at a local place. The guy told me they did't "advise" putting them on a stock rim. They recomend a wider rim. All other mfg.'s say the same, I checked websites. I told them to put them on anyway. He said he was required to tell me this. He also agreed they probably would'nt be a problem. Just make sure to rotate them often. About every 5,000 miles. They work great and I love 'em. No problems. Screw Sears.

I saw a guy who works in the service dept of the place i bought my HD from also had the BRG KO's 285/75R16 on his truck that is identical to mine. He still had his stock wheels so if they want to voifd my warranty ill just point to the picture of the truck with the guy in it. That should overcome that problem.

Sounds like you're dealing with an imbecile who's only concern is covering his $ss from some type of absurd lawsuit should your tires fail because they weren't factory sized. While there are scumbags out there who will sue for such things -- we've all seen those stories on the news -- this guy appears to have taken that paranoia to the extreme. Spend your hard-earned money elsewhere.

What these guys said.  I got mine done at the local Discount Tire store.  I even mentioned to him that I had a 6.5" rim and he could've cared less.  My $750 spoke louder.

Yeah, I might would print a couple pics from members of this forum.  Show them some 265's, 285's, 305's, and 315's on the factory rims and see what he thinks.

 

Also, that is one of the problems w/Sears.  The salesperson has little financial interest in selling tires.

I put 265 Michelins on mine because the local tire guy who I know and trust said that there would be absolutely no warranty if I put 285's on the stock rims.  He was also going to have me sign a waiver.  

 

I trust this guy, known him for years, and he does it to keep from losing his business.
