Grooves In Front Rotors

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I tried searching but couldn't find an answer (Monday after a Holiday so the brain isn't working so well). I was installing my new WeatherTech mud flaps and noticed my front rotors have some rather bad grooves in them. From what I can remember I've never felt any vibration or herd any noise when breaking and was shocked to see the grooves. Thinking about it I have herd them squealing a little under light breaking here lately and just thought it was due to the cold weather or maybe the pads needing to be replaced. I have not checked the pads yet to see what kind of condition they are in going to need to do that when I get home. I have a 2008 Silverado 1500 Ext. Cab with 31,000 miles on it. Is this normal life span on OE parts for the GMT900s? Would the rotors being grooved be covered under warranty? I have a list of things to go over with the dealer when I take the truck in later this week and guess I will add the rotors to the list also. I did find a lot of threads about which rotors and pads to upgrade to so if the dealer wont cover it with warranty I will be going thru those again and just upgrade when I have the extra cash (engagement ring and Christmas have me tapped out).

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some owners may comment on a scored appearance of the front brake rotors. This scoring could be caused by the make up of the front brake lining. The brake lining formula has ingredients to clean rust off the rotor braking surface. This cleaning feature of the rotor braking surface may have a side effect of scoring.

Recommendation/Instructions:

This scored appearance is normal as long as no other symptoms are experienced such as pulsation, roughness, noise, and the scoring does not exceed the specification in SI.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed

Thank you very much, I'll keep an eye or ear rather on the squealing and see if it gets worst or not other wise I guess it is "normal" according to GM.
