I have a 800 truck (2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3L) - which trailer hitch should I get and from where?

Hi Ed... the answer to this is ... it really depends on what you want to tow ... I would check out some of the custom hitch shops or RV dealerships in Calgary and talk to them .. find out the price ranges in your area.

Class I hitch are rated up to trailer GVW 2000 lbs

Class II hitch are rated for 2000 to 3500 GVW

Class III hitch are rated for 3500 to 5000 GVW

Class IV hitch are rated for 5000 to 10000 GVW

If you are going to tow a travel trailer, then you need a Class IV with weight distribution hitch.

If you are just pulling a small utility or cargo single axle trailer with no trailer brakes, then anything would fine, but on a truck I would not go less than a Class III.... just so you could always pull something substantial if you ever had to.

... or if you are looking to buy one and bolt it on yourself, then check out Princess Auto. They have a ClassIII/IV max 7,000 lb for $270 ... and they have lower rated ones for lower prices ...

I have a hitch that came off of my 06 Silverado GMT800 that I can sell you. The truck was a work truck that was not supposed to be towing anything so I had it mounted on. I removed it when I traded the truck in. I purchased it through Uhaul and it has an 8,000lbs gross trailer weight according to the sticker. All mounting hardware included. It should just bolt on.

$75 + shipping just to get it out of my basement.... PM me if interested...

    • New to this forum.  Also looking to tune a 6L80 and trying to work out all the issues in my transmission swap.  I have a 6.2 diesel (1983) and have removed the TH-400 and about to put in a 6L80 with a TCM-2600 interface and don't have a clue what I doing after that.  Did you (Leatherneck/RAV3) get your slip resolved? I too hate to spend that kind of money on a tuner that hopefully I will not need too many times although from what steelerdude15 added about the HP Tuner being great for diagnostics would be a plus.  I am also from WNC but below you in Columbus.  Any helo would be greatly appreciated.
