Brake Lights Work Intermittantly

My wife noticed last night while following me home after softball that my brake lights don't work all the time (well, most of the time actually).  But they were working this morning.  I have heard of the brake light actuator switch getting scratched or going bad.  Anyway, does anybody know anything about that?  What is the correct name for the part?  How hard is it to replace and how much does it cost?

That's a good question (which I don't know the answer), so I'm sending this thread back to the top!!!

You are correct that those have been subject to problems.  I replaced mine in my 94 Silverado a few years ago, it was pretty easy.  Before I replaced it I used to have to reach down and play with the switch to get it to work.  You may want to make sure that there wasn't a recall for it, I seem to remember getting the notice about a month after I replaced mine.
