Towing Confusion

Recommended Posts

Forgive my ingorance on the subject but I seem to be a bit confused.  I have read on this board and others about the best way to tow just about anything. Most recommend a weight distributing hitch. Here is where my confusion comes in.  When I bought my truck I got it with the factory heavy duty trailering package with includes the "Hitch receiver" mounted to the frame under the rear bumper. Would this receiver need to be removed if i was to add a "weight distributing hitch" or would it just be the peice that goes into the "hitch receiver"??????

Thanks for the help

The factory hitch will work fine! Its the piece that slides in, which starts the weight dist. system. 2 bars will attach to 2 plates which are attached to the trailer and the bars set in the trailer head. Then some sway control systems need a little ball on the head also.

Your factory reciever will accomodate this type of setup. This is how one hooks up. With one of these, I was able to tow a 29' 6200# travel trailer with a 4" lowered truck w/ airshocks and no sag. Pulled great. When I towed a smaller one home for the first time, I did not have one. What a difference it made when I did get one. They cost in the $400+ range w/ an anti swaybar included, but are worth every penny IMO.
