I need to change this seal tomorrow night. Service manual says I need a slide puller to pull the retainer. I can't find one that will fit in the small holes. 2000 Silverado 1500 NP 246. Is it possible to get it out without a puller? Thanks....Jack

WTF are you talking about ? no puller needed for a front output seal removal,

however they are a PITA to get out as it is a 2 pc seal,

and a installer for that 2 piece seal is required as the inner protion of the seal is pressed on the the output shaft.

dont forget to clean up the shaft as the rust is gonna be there ,

if this is to much for you fellow albertan, farm it out to a garage ,this job is worth paying a tech to do it,

my 2 cents where in Ab ?

I'm thinking the chilton service manual must have meant use a puller for the inner portion of the seal. How do you get that part of the seal off? Is it safe to cut it with a chisel? Was thinkin' I could make something to press it on. No time to leave my truck at a garage because work is busier than hell right now the way this winter has been. I can usually figure stuff out on my own so here's hoping I can figure this one out. Just hope I don't wreck this $65 dollar seal. The dealer wanted $160 so I decided to chance it with the aftermarket. Hope the bearing is ok too. Fixin' the ol' '79 Ford has been a lot easier but the tires on it just won't get me through the snow.

I'm in Med Hat.

the outer portion comes loose rather easy ,it the inner half that is the pain, you can poke a screwdriver along the shaft to stress the inner pressed on portion,

however the shaft can be danged SLIGHTLY and can be sanded smooth enough for install with ANAROBIC sealant .

installing really needs the installer or a good feel with a punch and hammer to working both peices evenly.

the bearing is fine ,these seals just suck ass .

good luck, take your time ,sand ,anarobic ,and buy the GM seal ,jobber parts suck IMHO

i worked in Taber ,lethbridge lived in Warner and Barnwell Ab lol

love the heat down there ,and hate the ****ing snow up here this year, nuts i tell ya!!

She's a done deal. No need for a tech as it was pretty simple. Original seal is not 2 piece. The replacement seal is because the shaft gets a groove worn in it. Hardest part was getting all the snow and ice knocked off underneath and getting dripped on the whole time. Hopefully it's still full of oil when I get to work tomorrow morning.
