Tranny Flash/Reprogram

I notice alot of discussion here about Tranny Reprogramming.  Is this something you ask for only if you're having problems or should you request it as a routine maintenence item, like upgrading your computer os / loading a patch to prevent a problem in the future?  Sorry if this seems like a silly question.

I carried my truck in for service and asked this same question.  They have a list of "recall" type flashes as well as complaint remedy type flashes that they don't offer unless you have the problem.  My service writer refered to them as "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Here is what happened to me on a 97 K1500. I had it in the shop and was getting brakes I asked about installing a shift kit to firm up shifts while towing . There was a TSB but guees what I was out of warranty. Cost me 65 bucks for a flash . I think they do that crap on purpose.

Gm could do better with flash codes. Atleast give the consumer some way to download it and apply it if they are going to charge for it. Computer companis give you a way to do it yourself with bios and firmawares and if you want to pay a tech. will do it for a fee. What is the difference here. Sure would be nice to have that option.

Go in, they'll take your VIN#, enter it into the system...the system checks for any outstanding campaigns, recalls, and TSB's pertaining to your VIN#.  Some VIN#'s have campaigns, recalls, or TSB's, others don't or have a mix and match of them.  If yours does have any, they'll perform them.

It's kinda like a recall on medicine or foods.  Only a certain "batch" is contaminated and as such, only that "batch" is recalled.

It is not a normal maintainance procedure to receive updates.

Thanks for the info guys.  CMNTMXR81 - I'll ask 'em to check the Vin# when my next oil change gets done.  And, I will take my camper off the truck before it goes in.
