Camping Options

Ive looked at those too, but living where I do, there is a problem with the cavass rotting. Mostly because people dont open them and let them dry out every so oftern. The humidity down here can get pretty oppressive.

Im leaning more and more toward a pop-up or a slide-in in a take-off truck bed. I just need to find the right one. I dont know for sure what Im gonna do.

Don't lose heart, just keep your nose to the ground and something will pop up. (no pun intended) The pop up is probably your best, cheapest option, you'll just have to find the right deal. They're out there. Keep looking...

What about just a small pop-up camper? You could find a used one for pretty cheap probably. Might be able to find an older one for cheaper than this one is listed on ebay.

Yup a cheap pop up would work good. Buddy of mine bought one for 200 when he was going thru divorce. Stayed at my farm for 2 months. Sold it for 500.but a pop up might be just the ticket for you.

Have you seen the small tear drop shaped trailer/campers. Just a place to sleep with a bit of flat bed in frant for gear. I think they are under $1000. Wish i was more help but idk what they are called. They have them at the gander mountain here.

If its the ones Im thinking of, they are called teardrops. Ive looked into one of these, but for the money, Ide rather have a little more room. I could piece a small shed together for that.

I noticed yesterday that my wife's parents' neighbor has a small 12' camper. Its not a pop-up but its nice and compact. I may check on that one and see if he might sell.

Look around is all I can say. I was in the same predicament a few years ago then I found this in a local free magazine here. I think I paid around 500 for it, and plenty of elbow grease later it is a great little trailer. I've drug this thing all over the state with no problems.

That looks almost identical to what my in-law's neighbor has. Maybe he will let it go for a couple hundred.

I know little trailers like that are out there. I originally started this thread as a means of collecting ideas for things that I could A) build fairly cheaply, or B) a cheap light weight alternative to a travel trailer that I may not have thought of on my own. Dont get me wrong. Its not that I dont appreciate your input.

I appreciate all input, and encourage you to continue to help. I was just kinda re-stating what was mentioned in my first post.

Not sure what your price range is but what about this?

Its called a Coleman Switchback, they are basically a trailer that converts to a tent. I know gander mountain sold an atv trailer that had a small camper shell in the front (room for a bed and some gear.)

EDIT: Here is a site with a few different types:

not sure what they run pricewise but you might try searching for a teardrop trailer...they will be small in size but you can still have lifted suspensions and off road tires so you can drag it back to your spot

Yes Ive tried CL and Ebay.

I guess my main problem is that Im cheap. I know theres lots of good campers out there, but they are either too expensive, or would take more money to make them adequate than I want to put into it. Id only really be camping during hunting season so I can justify spending too much. Im looking more and more into a shack that can be loaded onto a trailer. something like a 6x8 or 6x10 shed building. That way I could haul it in before the season and haul it out after the season. And it wouldnt be permanent so the land owner would be happy.

I dont know what Im gonna do, but Ive got until September to figure it out.

Could you just build a little shack out there in the trees? A few sheets of plywood, some 2x4s, air mattress. You could maybe even set it up so that it would double as a blind.

    • Shock and spring rates are specific to the NHT max tow package.  Changing them will alter the performance of the suspension.   Not even the factory GM Trail Boss 2 in lift is compatible with NHT trucks as well.
    • Thanks, all. It sounds like keeping the software "as is" is the best course of action.
    • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overengineering   Excerpt from the above link: (BTW the above is a 90 second read)   [Quote]   A story about very precise engineering is given in the 1858 story The Deacon's Masterpiece or, the Wonderful "One-hoss Shay": A Logical Story by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., which tells of a carriage (one-horse shay) Because it had been engineered so that no single piece failed first – no piece was over-engineered relative to the others, and they thus all collapsed at the same time. A similar quote by Ferdinand Porsche claimed "the perfect race car crosses the finish line in first place and immediately falls into pieces."[5]   [End Quote}   By Engineering's  own definition then; the AFM and Torque Converters, 4-5-6 clutch assembly of the 6L80E, and a dozen other common chronic parts and systems failures are "UNDER ENGINEERED". And by their own definition done so with INTENT. Ya can't have it both ways OEM's.

    • I was in Utah this week attempting a bow hunt in the Wasatch mountains with friends.  On the evening of the first hunt, making my way across a ridge to a friends camp, the upper control arm on the driver's side separated, the CV axle got trashed, and the wheel was dang near at a 45 degree angle to the ground.  I was able to get it towed off the mountain and into town about 3:00 am, and spent the remainder of the night in an O'Reilly's parking lot.  Luckily, there was a Chevrolet dealership not to far away so I was able to get to the dealership and pick up a new CV and UCA.  It would have been a few days before they could have gotten to the truck and I brought tools with me on hunt since it was a two day drive to get there, so I did the repairs myself in the O'Reilly's parking lot.      What's interesting is that the UCA ball joint didn't break, it just popped out of the bottom of the UCA.  There was VERY LITTLE evidence of grease on the ball joint or in the socket, and you could see where the ball joint had warbled out part of the socket over time.  I guess that's what happens over 186K miles of use :)   Big Kudos to O'Reilly's for letting me work on the truck in their parking lot.  However, they made a $150+ off of me from the purchase of various tools, so I guess it was in their best interest anyways :)   Getting towed off the mountain.   UCA Ball Joint Socket   Trashed CV   Suspension disconnected and UCA and CV Removed   New UCA and CV installed with the suspension buttoned up.
