Manual Transmission Engine Rev Problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 silverado 2500hd with 6.0 with a 5 speed.

I call it a problem.. but im sure its designed to do this, but when you shift in and out of gears.. the engine will increse rpm for a few seconds.

I do not understand why it does this. it makes it difficult to drive. no other car even modern that ive driven does this. you take it out of gear.. rpm naturally goes down. my truck.. likes to rev up. anyone know how to make this problem disapear?

so your saying it revs up when you let the clutch down? how big of a rev? i mean your going to want some rev when shifting gears as you need the extra power to not kill the truck

Hate to ask but is your foot on the throttle at all when your depressing the clutch? Have you tried taking your foot completely off the gas then then depresssing the clutch?

Does the gas pedal travel smoothly the whole pedal? Does seem to bind at all? If I remember write that one doesn't have drive by wire. Maybe making sure there isn't any build up on the throttle body plate?

Clean your maf sensor and throttle body. Years ago, I had a similar issue but the reverse. It would stall as soon as I stepped on the clutch unless I maintained my foot on the gas petal.

nope foot off throttle completely. It's smooth otherwise in every gear from low rpm to high rpm. Only when you press the clutch it will momentarily rev about 400rpm higher. Even if you rev up prior to shifting out of gear and slide out of gear without using clutch it still does it.

I've grown up driving older cars and trucks and motorcycles, and I use the transmission to slow down around corners to come out with a higher rpm to speed up fast again. My brain and feet control the gas petal as I need in order to shift to and from gear to gear with the speeds and Rpms.

I'm thinking the computer is doin this increase in rpm to aid people who are unable to drive a manual transmission.

Havnt checked tbi, only because it seems to be somethin electronic. Only when you shift. Everytime you shift.

As far as clutch goes. It has lots of grab still. Doesn't slip or grab abnormally.

Either start by cleaning the TB, or take it and have it properly diagnosed. It is not normal. Try two tanks treated with Chevron Techron Plus. Run them down below a 1/4 tank. Or even better a tank treated with BG 44k.

Thanks. I'm glad to hear it isn't normal. I know 0 people with manual transmissions in newer era trucks and I've been convinced its intentional.

I had a 94 with a 350 and the 5 speed manual. Drove it 150,000 miles and it never did anything like that.
