Ok.  Who here has tackled putting remote start into their 99 or later Silverado??  My girlfriend got a new truck and wants remote start before winter finally gets here.  I dont want to make her spend close to 500 bucks to have the thing installed.  How easy is it to put in?  I have a wire location giude telling where each needed wire is in the truck.  Now all I need is some insight on what to do now.  I have donw quite a bit of electrical stuff in trucks at work but no alarms or remote start.  Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't install mine but I do know that you'll need to get a passlock II device that will make the truck think that the key is in the ignition.  I'm sure someone else will chime in and help you more.

SilveradoMan,

I was wondering which Anti-theft setup my truck had.  I just got ahold of a DEI passlock 2 transponder for 20 bucks today.  Im gonna try to give the alarm a shot this weekend.

you really might want to let a shop do it because there is some major stuff you can mess up with the starting system.

the shop that did mine was the first one they ever did on a 99 since I bought mine when they first came out  and even then they messed the system up and the dealership had to reflash the ecm.

I did it last fall.  Piece of cake.  Do a search for "remote starter".  I think it was sometime around last October.

It took me about 6 hours including messing around time.

I'm a mechanical engineer who knows just enough about electronics to get myself in trouble.  I think I still have the video that came with my starter if you want it.  E-mail me since I don't get to check the forum that often.

What do you do about the Passlock II?

There's an extra box that you have to buy and wire in to get around it.  Note:  it only bypasses the Passlock when the remote starter sends a signal to the starter.  Otherwise, it works as stock.

Check out http://www.bulldogsecurity.com.

They make great remote starters. And they're built in the good ole' United States.  :jester:

I bought an RS-102E, the Model 791 TheftLock/PassLock Bypass Module, and a T-Harness.

The T-Harness is awesome because it plugs right into the steering column factory harness.

So there's no need hack your wires up.

If I can remember correctly, you'll only need to install the hood pin switch. (So the truck won't remote start when your playing under the hood)

Hope that helps,

WELL.  After a whole friday night and most of saturday, the whole setup is in.  AND working.  Was not much fun but it gave me something to do.  As far as the Passlock module goes, I had to go pick a new one up at Best Buy because the one I got off eBay was fried.  It ran me 50 bucks, it was a DEI 555L bypass module.  Passlock wire colors in a 99 are Orange/Black, Red/White andYellow.  Next step may be a window automation module.  :thumb:
