Used 08+ Denali Trucks

Whats up fellas? New member to GMtrucks here but have been on the ls1tech and silveradoss forums for a couple years now. I have an 03 Silverado SS and love the truck but I'm coming down to the last few payments until she's paid off :uhoh: and I'm looking for an upgrade. Hence the 08+ denali title. I've been looking for the past few months and am loving what I'm seeing. I was just looking for some advice on what to look for. My 03 SS has the common front diff "moan" which honestly isnt as bad as some of the horror stories I've heard but it would have been nice to know what I was getting myself into before I bought it and researched it on silveradoss.com AFTER it was in my driveway. Anyway I'm getting a little long winded here so basically I'm asking what it is I may need to watch out for when looking for a used 08 and up denali truck. Diff or tranny issues? brakes? electronics? Thanks for the time and help guys

Not much that I know of that's specific to Denalis. Just browse around the forums though, and you'll find plenty of people with belly aches over various things on the GMT-900 platform in general.

1. AFM (not an issue on the 6.2 engines in 08)

2. Thin sheet metal

3. Wimpy factory tune

4. Sandy vaginas

5. Interior rattles

6. Et al

7. WELCOME to the forum :uhoh:

The 6.2 has no where near the throttle lag the 6.0 had. I've owned 2 GMT-900's now and they are pretty solid for the most part. Not much to worry about.

thanks guys, I know I'm entering a pretty new market with these trucks I'm looking at being a max of 3 years old but if anyone is going to know what little problems/tweaks come up, I've learned its guys/gals on these forums

thanks man, throttle lag? not sure what exactly you're referring to but I'll take your word for it. From what I understand the Silverado SSs were the only gmt-800 AWD platform with 4:10s and compared to my buddys TBSS I've got him for the first 60 ft (then it sorta becomes an ass beating :uhoh: ) but granted we are driving 2 tons of fun and you can't really compare our trucks to LS cars as far as brute acceleration goes. But I'm not buying this one nor did I buy my current truck to race camaros and cobras, just wanted to have something a little less common but still sounds healthy. Are the denali gmt-900's 4:10 off hand? Once again thanx for the newbie help, hope to join the gmt-900 crew shortly

I went from a 2003 SS to a 2008 Denali Rwd and love it better gas milage almost same ride maybe a little smoother

The only thing I hate about the Denali is the tan leather and carpet

The only problem I had to go to dealer for was fogging tail lights

And last yesterday the locker in the rear end stayed locked during 2 left turns so I will do a fluid change this weekend and check things out

Oh and it feels quicker

RWD??!! I was under the impression that all the 900 denalis were AWD? Is it 2 or 4wd because unfortunately 2wd is out of the question here for me in Michigan as I look outside to a fresh 4 inches of the white stuff. I would absolutely love to have a 4wd denali. There's nothing more fun than drifting around the neighborhood in 2 in the snow :uhoh: ,something I dearly miss about my old truck. Im guessing it would be a real bitch to find a used one within reasonable distance though.

they make GMT900 RWD and AWD denalis...no 4WD denalis. i agree on the drifting thing, makes me feel like im ken block when it snows out.

i have never ever seen or heard of any RWD denalis before but obviously they exist. i guess the RWD trucks/suvs are way bigger down where theres no snow.

very nice looking SS by the way

Yeah after some quick browsing it does look like there are 2wd denalis but they're like trying to find needles in a haystack and wouldn't be for me anyway. Yeah man I hear you about the snow-capades, I would literally drift through entire neighborhoods in 2wd narrowly missing mailboxes and parked cars. So maybe its not such a bad thing that Ive been unable to do it here for the past few years lol. Thanks for the compliment, the wheels aren't for everyone and every now and then you'll find some assclown wanting to shit in your coffee about how terrible they are and this and that so I appreciate it man.

The lowest gear ratio you'll find in a GMT-900 Denali is the 3.42's. I've never seen one lower. If you want lower gears, the only way to get that is ordering a regular truck with the 6.2L 6-speed and the max trailer package. That gets you 3.73' and let me tell you it's a BIG difference over the 3.42's. I've driven several and the 3.42's just didn't do it for me.

For the entire package, SLT with max trailer gets you almost all the bells and whistles the Denali has but in my opinion, selectable 4x4 and 3.73 gears. :uhoh: And stock for stock, the 6.2L with 3.73 gears will run circles around the SS. My previous truck was an SLT Vmax with the 367hp 6.0L 4-speed with 4.10 gears. Even tuned, the new truck would destroy it.

I agree with Steve, I'd order a regular truck with selectable 4x4. You'll save money and get a faster truck out of the deal. Not to mention the true 4x4 will handle the snow better than the AWD. There are tons of 6.2 guys on these forums making us all jealous, just ask them how much they love their trucks. They act like they're the best things since sliced bread... :uhoh:

Sweet looking SS, btw. I dig the wheels.

Thanks again for the input fellas, the new 6.2s are that nasty eh? Well that's good hear. I hear you guys on the selectable 4x4 and 3.73 package but like I said, I'm not out here street racing every riced out corolla I see, if I wanted to do that Id go with the new camaro (which I haven't exactly ruled out either :uhoh: ) And with that said I personally don't think there is a better lookin truck on the planet than the 900 denali. Im not quite sure about slapping the wheels onto my new rig just yet, speaking of that, are the 800s and 900s the same bolt pattern??

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
