Transmission Slow To Engage

Hello!

 

I recently bought a 1998 GMC Sierra 5.7 350 engine. Completly stock with 122,000 miles. When shifting from park into any of the forward gears there is a 4 second delay until it shifts.

 

Also I noticed when on the highway the truck should be shifting into Overdrive at 40-45. Sometimes it does and sometimes its in the "mode" between 3 and Overdrive for about 1 minute than it will completly engage into overdrive.

 

Any suggestions will help!

It's in OD, that "shift" you're used to is the torque converter locking up.

Obvious things first, is the fluid full? Does it look pinkish red, or is it brown and burned smelling?

The fluid is the correct color and does not smell. I think it was recently flushed, but doubt the filter was replaced.. who knows. Could that even cause this issue, or what are you thinking?

I was thinking low fluid equals slow gear engagement when shifting from park. Your torque converter issue is probably either a fried TC or a sticky engagement valve. As the engagement valve gets up there in miles it "mushrooms" a little and likes to stick.
