Drive Shaft Trouble.

So a few months ago I pulled the drive shaft out and greased the yoke splines. Now I think the problem is worse. But it is speratic. Sometimes when you drive easy it will clank and sometimes it will not. So my question is, Did i do it wrong, like not enough grease or what? Has any one else have this problem?

Could it be failing U-joints?

I dont think so, I did check those and did not see any play. The truck has 32000 on it.

MIne did the same thing. I never had an issue until my truck was in for a transmission repair. When I got it back, it had the clunk. I cleaned and greased the splines, and it was good for about 2 months, so I did it again, using Lucas Red Grease (not sure of the exact name) and it lasted for about 1 month. I finally got some marine grease from walmart (again, not sure of the name) and did it once more, but put a bit more grease than before, and it has lasted 7 months this time. I have no idea if it was the quantity or quality that worked better this time.

 

Make sure you use a good marine grease, and don't get one with molybdenum in it.

I did buy my grease from walmart, it was a marine grease by penzoil I think. I think i did not put enough in there so I will try it again.

Be careful when greasing the slip yoke. GM released a TSB a few months ago stating to not use the GM grease on trucks that use Dex VI in the transfer case because there is no barrier to keep the grease from mixing with the fluid. They are not compatible with each other. This is with the GM grease so I'm not sure if this applies to any grease other than the GM though but I would be careful.

That is probably true with the 4 wheel drive models. The nickel plated slip yoke may be the best cure, but it isn't cheap if not covered under warranty. Funny thing is, I bet all of us would have been willing to pay an extra 50.00 or so for our truck if they would have just put the right one on there to begin with.
