4l60e Flaring 2-3 Shift

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 1996 chevrolet suburban that was not running when I bought it (very cheap) but everything is in amazing condition. I got it running and to my dismay found that the 4l60e in it had no 3rd or 4th. It just shifted into basically neutral after 2nd. I pulled that transmission and installed one that had supposedly been rebuilt by a guy who worked at a tranny shop as a spare for his own truck. (he rebuilt it while he worked there. supposedly beefed up sunshell, clutches... etc) He had since been laid off and needed cash so it was for sale. I got it cheap (see the trend here).

Anyhow, I got it in and went out for a drive and everything seemed good at first, though the shifts did seem kinda soft. After a few minutes of driving i noticed that the 2-3 shift had developed at significant 500 rpm flare. I have since found that if the truck is dead cold it works for a few minutes, albeit softly, but after it gets even a little warm the flare comes back until its cold again.

I was really concerned and so I read forums about it until I found a recall that supposedly solved this issue for some using a jumper cable to fix a faulty ground in the vcm. I unplugged the tranny to make it go into failsafe mode and it has a nice solid 3rd gear this way. No slipping at all. That made me feel better about the transmission, and i thought the recall would solve it.

I performed the recall today, plugged everything in again, and nothing has changed. It's still flaring once its warm on the 2-3 shift. Anyone have any thoughts? This is driving me crazy, I really don't wanna have to pull that tranny again... though its looking like I might have to. Not to mention... I really don't wanna pay the premiums that people around here want for rebuilt 4l60e's

Please help.

By the way, I have no MIL on.
