Brake Light On But Fluid Ok - 96 Sonoma

I just went out to take a quick drive and noticed my brake light was on. When I pressed the brake pedal to throw it into reverse it felt a little strange. Almost like it slipped a bit and I seemed able to press it further than usual. I did a quick drive around the block and it seems to be ok. I'm not sure if I'm paranoid or if the peddal is actually softer. I tried engaging and releasing the ebrake but the light is still there. I checked the fluid level and it's well above the minimum.

 

What would be my best course of action? Is there anyway I can figure this out without going to a shop? I'm a student so... you know how it is.
