Tranny Slam And Cel

Took my truck into dealership for fluid changes on transmission, diffs, & transfer case along with diagnosing an engine oil leak. They also suggested i should get a throttle body cleaning given my mileage (64K).

As far as the oil leak they added dye to oil and said bring back in 500 to 1000 miles.

When i got the truck back on the way home the idle was all over the place - from 400 to 2500 just sitting still. This began to smooth out over the next day. 200 miles later the CEL comes on and by this time the idle is pretty much back to normal. I take it to advance auto and get it checked - "engine running lean" (in so many words). I get it cleared and it comes back in another 200 miles and will remain on until i see the dealer again.

The other problem is my transmission is slamming from 1st to 2nd gear at random times. Its done it a dozen times in the last 400 miles. It has never, ever done this until the transmission was serviced by the dealer.

My question is, what in the hell is going on!? I take it to the dealer for routine services and they have created problems :sigh: I would like any input to educate myself for when i go back this week. Thanks.

I don't know if this would effect the tranny, but the weird idle and lean codes sounds like the intake tube came off the throttle body. I had mine pop off, and it kept tossing codes at idle, once you'd rev it up, it would suck back onto the throttle body and run again. It may be causing the weird shifts too.

Since they did a TB clean, it sounds like thats the case.

i assume you have the 4l60e?(4 speed) trans? i know alot of them have that goofy bump shift from 1st to second...i woulden't classify it as a harsh shift but its noticeable...

Well its a hard slam with a loud noise. It felt like someone rear-ended me.

TPS.

I'd say you might need a new throttle postion sensor. Could have been cause by the svc or just went bad. They are a sucky design.

This for sure could cause Idle issues as well as the TCM not really getting a good idea on where the throttle is.

As for the lean code. Not sure there, could be a seperate issue but... TPS codes are typically set without turning on the cel.
