Need Some Advice

I need some advise on a truck tune. I've done a bunch of research and have decided to get a performance tune on my 2010 GMC Sierra. I found a local shop and talked with the guys. Their shop is awesome and they really seem to know what they're doing. They recommend a tune with HP Tuners becuase it's the most flexible and is a bit less expensive. They can shut of the V4 option, do a 93 octane tune, plus firm up the tranny (6 speed). From what I understand with an HP Tune I don't come away with a hand help device, the tune is in their computers. If this is correct I'd like to get a hand held code reader so I can troubleshoot engine codes. So, a question to all the experts out there: Does this sound right and if so, any recommendations as to what device to get after the tune ? I'd like some type of reader that's completely self contained so I don't need to involve a laptop. Is this the best way to go guys ?

Welcome to the site. What your looking for is AutoCal handheld tuner. It goes hand in hand with with HP tuners. And yes... What these guys are talking about tuning is what you want done. It makes a huge difference how the truck drives and runs.

So, if I'm underdstaning this correctly the AutoCal is a hand-held tuner in its own right that I can use to do additional tuning or no? Can I read/clear codes down the road, and can I put my stock tune back if I have to, or do I need to go back to the tune-shop to get that done ?

Thanks,

Jack

Yes.. thats correct. You can have your stock tune loaded in the tuner.. .and swap from a custom tune to stock tune. Make additional tweeks and read/clear codes. Also data logging :P

Big 10-4, thanks for the huge help.

One more question: Ever hear of an SCT tuner ? This is the more expensive alternative to the HP tune the shop mentioned. With this I'd come away w/a handheld for code reading and additional tweaking. I'd still pay for a custom tune. How do these stack up against the HP tune and going with the Autocal as a handheld option ?

I'm going to have a custom tune done on my 2010 GMC later this month (3 week wait to get to the Dyno, geez...). The tuner is going to use HP Tuners. He told me that he'll keep my custom tune on his equipment as well as my stock tune in case I ever need it reloaded. I suppose he could load both on a flash drive in case I ever move, then someone else who uses HP could reload it on the truck. As far as code readers I see a couple out there for under $200 that can read & clear codes. Just do a search & you'll find them. Hope this helps, but I think your question about SCT is a good one, will keep watching this thread & see of one of the experts answers.

Good luck man !!!!
