stevefrench Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado and it has started to rust on the rear fenders. The rust is just where the paint has blistered and fallen off but it has not rusted through at all. I took it to a autobody shop and said about $1500 to fix both fenders. I am a college student and cannot afford an expensive repair. I was thinking about just buying some fender flares to cover it up and painting underneath. Tell me what you guys think? Thanks
j13smiley Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 rust will continue to spread. you can cover it up if you want but it will continue to grow and spread and eventually your flares won't be big enough to hide it. only way to fix is to cut it all out and do a correct repair. or let it continue to rust.
VTJosh Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I suppose you could sand the rust down to bare metal or as good as you can and apply some rust reformer on it then paint.
blacksierra01 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Yeah, if you arent going to cut it out and do it right, and IMO, a 2001 truck isnt worth a $1500 body job. Im actually in the same boat as you, Im planning on just sanding it down, coating it with rust converter, and painting it. It should help it last a few more years, But dont do the fender flares, because they just hold dirt/moisture and salt.
Deconstruction Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 wire wheel out all the rust, spray paint it, polish the entire vehicle using 3m now it looks shiny and is all one color seriously it works I will try and take pictures of my work on my bosses 07 denali that I did this on
