Snapping Sound Through Driver Side Floorboard

Recommended Posts

I am experiencing a snapping sound in my 2002 silverado 1500 ext cab 4wd through the drivers side floorboard. I tried greasing the top of the A pillar mount, some success for awhile but the noise is back again and worse than ever. I replaced the lower mount, same place with no success. I then installed a 3mm rubber shim to the topside of the A pillar mount and torqued to 63 ft pounds, no success, then torqued to 100 ft pounds, no success. Please help, as I am sure that this is where the sound is coming from.

I have the Exact same issue and just cant seem to get rid of it .

hoping someone sheds a lil light on this topic !

Please and thanks

I think I figured it out, the noise is gone. I took the A pillar mount out and cleaned all of the grease with brake clean. I took the next mount back and swapped them. Added the insulator to the A pillar mount then I torqued it to 73ft pounds. Drove the truck 100km today and so far no problems. QUIET FINALLY.

I have a 2000 Z71, 1500, ext cab, 125K miles, and started hearing the same type of snapping sound a few weeks ago.

Mostly when braking & turning left @ low speed

I've retorqed all the cross memeber bolts, replaced the sway bar bushings, new shocks.

None of this has seemed to help.

I'm not quite sure I follow what you did. Any chance you happen to have any pics?

Thanks

I just re-read your post.

So when you say "A-Pillar Mount",

are you talking about the body to frame mounting bushing at the A-pillar (front of the door area)

I've been suspicious of the body mounts but haven't tried replacing any yet.

Is is difficult?

Thanks

Sorry I didn't get right back to you but yes the body mount under the drivers feet. I had been dealing with this creaking and cracking prob for about a year and hopefully this has fixed the prob. The reason I had put grease on the mount, was that I thought if it was binding on metal, this would help, but it was just a temp fix. Then I had read on the net that there were insulators available for under the mount, between the mount and frame,so I got one to try(it was cheap to buy at the gm dealer, under $5) Then I had read on here, someone said that grease might amplify the prob. So to get to your ques. I loosened off all four mount bolts on the drivers side, released the parking brake cable,it is right there at the cab mount that has to come out. Leave the cab mount bolts tight on the pass side. I jacked the truck right beside the mount that had to come out and it takes quite a bit of height for that mount to come out. Once I was high enough I took it out.I then sprayed all the grease off the cab floor area where the mount sits up into with brake kleen, plus the mount itself,I cleaned up any rust on the frame where the mount sits and I looked for any sign of cracks. Then I swapped mounts with the one from the middle of the cab which at this time is easy to get out. I added the plastic insulator and then sat the cab back down in place. Torqued the cab mount bolts to 73ftlbs and put the emergency brake cable back in place. It worked for me. Ps not really sure if the mount was the prob or the insulator corrected the snapping sound. I also replaced the bottom part of the mount as well. Hope this helps you.

The GM # for the insulator is 15899719.As to how i came up with the 73ftlbs torque on the mount bolts is a GM bulletin that someone had put on the net regarding this known problem with these trucks. If this is incorrect, please let me know. This has however made a difference in my truck, still quiet after 200kms.
