2002 Z71 Tahoe - Motor Dying

My Chevy Tahoe has a Whipple SC (CARB Legal) on it. I put it on over 8 years ago and when the motor had less than 15,000 miles on it. Today I have over 141,000 mile and the compression is low on my number 7 cylinder - 75 lbs; no power and throwing code: "number 7 cylinder misfire." Questions are:

1. Rebuild the motor? If so what should I do for better longevity (given pressure generated from the super charger) e.g. better valve, lifter springs and piston rings (if so what brand/type)

2. What havoc would I create - if rebuild the motor and also put in a RV Cam? What cam grind or model recommended (given super charged)?

3. Crate motor - best (and cheapest) place to get a good crate motor?

4. I am thinking of keeping the Tahoe and am hesitant on getting a used junk yard motor - thoughts input?

Thank you for your time and input![/size]

If you are serious about keeping the truck, then do not bother with a wrecker engine. As you already know, there are many routes to take. Were it me, I would be looking at a crate engine, but not just the stocker crate engine. I would be looking more for the factory high performance type crate engine. You will either want a low compression engine and keep the blower, or sell the blower and get a high compression crate engine.

Putting an aftermarket cam in an engine with a blower requires some thought. Years ago Crower made a cam that was quite wild, and put it into a very high compression ratio engine. The thought was that the cam would trick the engine into thinking it was low compression, and would run on pump gas. Not sure if that is around anymore or not, but it is an idea.

Thank you Doug for the reply. I am thinking of keeping the Tahoe. I don't need a "radical" engine in the Tahoe - I do need reliability (hunt/fish/camp out in the middle of nowhere land) and power when I tow. I would still like to use the super charger.

I looked into the new crate motors advance auto sales have. I didn't go through with it, I traded for an avalanche. I read quite a few good things about the motors and they come with a pretty good warranty, also the cheapest I found. Wish you well in whatever you decide to do!
