How-To: Replace Intake Air Temperature Sensor On 2002 Envoy.

Hello everyone,

My mother drives a '02 GMC Envoy that has amassed 142,000 miles on it, impressively requiring very little mechanical repairs (save for routine maintenance jobs). However, one issue that needed to be addressed was a faulty intake air temperature sensor.

Here is the simple procedure for replacing the intake air temperature sensor on a '02 GMC equipped with the 4.2L I-6 engine:

1) Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.

2) Remove the clamps securing the IAT sensor assembly to the air cleaner and intake air duct.

3) Carefully remove the IAT sensor from the air cleaner and intake air duct.

Caution: Handle the MAF sensor carefully. Do not drop the MAF sensor in order to prevent damage to the MAF sensor. Do not damage the screen located on the air inlet end of the MAF. Do not touch the sensing elements. Do not allow solvents and lubricants to come in contact with the sensing elements. Use a small amount of a soap based solution in order to aid in the installation.

-Installation-

1) Carefully install the IAT sensor into the air cleaner and intake air duct.

2) Install the clamps securing the IAT sensor assembly to the air cleaner and intake air duct. Tighten the clamps to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.).

3) Reconnect the IAT sensor electrical connector.

Note that the IAT sensor is ref #3 in the following diagram:
