Question for you guys.

Looking for some nurf bars and have looked at the Westin CPS bars but a local store also carries Bully by Pilot brand and they look as nice as the Westin's but are alot cheaper in price.

Anybody hear of or know about the quality of the Bully bars?

The one I'm looking at is a stainless steel bar for a 2002 Chevy Silverado extended cab.

Any thing about these bars good or bad would be great.

Thanks,

Brad

I'm not familiar with the Bully bars, but have a bit of advise. The Westins are a great product, from what I can see, but seem to be just a tad steep in price. I personally feel the name is what you are paying for. I also feel that you get what you pay for, for the most part. What kind of price difference are you talking? What type of store are you purchasing from. I know the Luverne brand SS bars are a decent price and do hold up well.

I also have seen a post somewhere on here about different types of stainless steel. I think "TxDoc" made the reply about it in another post.

I'm thinking of buying the nerf bars and a tonneau cover from a local store. I know their more expensive but I'm concerned about the step bars rusting and needed replacement under warrenty. Thats why I plan on buying them local.  If I mail order them I may have to pay shipping if I have a claim under warrenty and that will coast more in the long run. I found the local store to be about $100.00 more or less then prices on the internet.

The local store has the stainless Bully bars for $380.00 and the Westin CPS bars for $499.00 This is the installed price.  Both have a lifetime warrenty.  I need to check with them if they have a diffrent price if I install them.

The tonneau cover I'm thinking of getting is the Access brand and the local store sells them for $429.00. Best price I can find on the Internet is $425.00 so for $4.00 I don't think it's worth it to mail order the cover.  I will be installing the tonneau cover. Plus I'm hoping to get the local store to know off some on the price if I buy both items.

I think the bottom line is if you get a stainless nerf bar it will be OK as long as it has a life time warrenty.  That's the way I'm thinking.

Just wish I could find more info on these Bully bars before I buy them.

what kinda tonnaeu cover are you going with?  Snaps, power?

I have the gm cover and it is wonderful.  Great thing is good quality and less than $300

Are the Bully bars chrome plated stainless like the Westins or are they just stainless?  Regular stainless can start to "yellow" after a few years of exposure and will require polishing.  The Westin bars are going to be shiny forever with just regular washings...

You can buy the bars online for a cheaper price and install them yourself if you like...

Thanks for all the help guys.

Here's what I ended up with.

Since I couldn't find too much info on the Bully bars I started looking again at the Westin CPS bars and trying to find a better price.  I called a tons of other local stores and found a Rino linings place that also sells accessories.  The had the Westin CPS nerf bars and the Access cover. He said if I got both of the he would sell me the Westin bars for $378.00 installed and the Access cover for $429.00 installed.  I said you have a deal.  Stoped by there shop after work and in less then 30 minutes they had put both items on and I was on my way.  Great place to do  business with.

I still can't beleive I got both items on my truck and I didn't have to do any of the work and it didn't cost me any more to have them install them.

Now I have to get used to using the bars. After having my truck for a year and just jumping in or out I must retrain myself to use the bars. :D

I did find out some info on the Bully bars. They have only been in the market for about 2 years and the do make an OK bar. I have been told they use a top grade of stainless steel. The bars are stainless and have a life time warranty.

One thing the guy at the install shop said about them is they are Ok bars but some of the problems they have seen with bars other then Westin's is the fasteners that hold on the step pads tend to not be as good as the Westin's.  He said they have never had a warranty claim on any Westin CPS bars.

I feel better knowing I got the Westins.

Thanks again.

Hopefully if we get some nice weather I can wash the truck and take some pictures and post them.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
