2001 4.8 Vortec Cylinder Head Installation

I have a 2001 GMC Yukon with a 4.8 engine. 280,000 miles. Unexplained coolant loss. One quart in 200 miles.

Removed one head found tons of cream colored goop inside valve cover. Casting mark is 28 not CASTECH.

No visible crack. I decided to go ahead and replace the heads since everythiong else is good.

 

My question is this: Do I need to index the valves to TDC in anyway? It seems that the new head should just drop in place since I have not messed with the timing chain.

 

Do I need to do anything to the lifter or will they fill with oil when I start it?

Changing heads will not change cam timing, but, removing distributer will effect ignition timing. If you mark and note everything on disassemble, it will go back together easier. Do not trust your memory, it will fail if you leave the garage. Photos and notes. If someone helps you, make sure they are also there for putting back together. Trying to reassemble something that someone else took apart is not nice if you have little to no experience in the job. Not trying to scare you, just making sure you understand that just because girls can do it, that does not make it easy.

Index valves to TDC? Sorry, never heard of it, don't understand what you're asking.

 

The rocker arms on this engine are installed and torqued, no further adjustements necessary for them or the lifters.

 

No distributor on a 4.8l engine.

Thats what I thought but it seemed too easy.

By index valves I meant index camshaft, #1 cylinder, and distributer the old school way.

I just thought I must have forgotten something.
