4L60E Gear Q?

OK, the 4 in the 4L60E means 4 forward gears (3.06, 1.63, 1.00, .70). So why does my 05 shift 4 times when getting up to speed? It cant start out in 0 gear, so whats the deal. My wifes Tahoe doesnt shift 6 times (at least I dont thik it does). I could be wrong but the 4 speed should start in first, and shift 3 times into OD, but I can watch my tach and watch the RPMs drop 4 seperate times, like it was a 5 spd. Every truck Ive had before has done the same thing, and thin is just something I was thinking about.

I know pretty much squat about transmissions so please be easy with your comments.

Probably feeling the torque converter locking in. I could be wrong, I have been before. Just my thoughts as mine does the same thing and that's what I assumed it was.

+1 more for TC lockup. Since lockup is allowed in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, you can actually have a 7 speed trans if you drive that thing just right. OK, I know; big deal. Still, pretty nice of the General to "slip" (pun intended) that little feature in there, huh?

Lower RPM = better fuel economy when locked. Also, a locked converter produces far less heat than an unlocked one.

yup !!
