Vibration when braking after new wheel and tire install

My '08 Sierra crew cab came with the 17' wheels and 265 tires so I finally got around to putting some KMC XD 800 Misfits in a 18x9 with 0 offset and some 305/60-18 Nitto Terra Grapplers on after a little over a year (pictures to come later today). Well I've had zero problems prior to the install and when I leave the tire shop I notice the tires ride smooth and a pretty quiet but now when I apply the brakes the front end starts to vibrate. Obviously the faster I am going and the harder I apply the brakes the more it vibrates. No vibration in the steering wheel, just in the front end and the pedal, any suggestions or has anybody had the same problem ? Thanks in advance

Sounds like you've got some rotors warping on you. Have a brake shop do a check out on your brake and have necessary repairs done. My factor rotors were done by 50k miles due warping. I had them turned once but the rotors starting warping within 15k miles so I changed out all the braking parts.

sounds like you have warped rotors. was it night and day? started right after the swap?

 

 

I've had the truck since last March and haven't had a single vibration or anything with the factory wheels and tires and as soon as I left the tire shop with the new wheels and tires the vibration started. Could it possibly be the retaining clips or rings ?

OK problem solved...........took off the infamous retainer clips and no more vibration. :thumbs:

From the factory there will be little retaining clips (washer looking deal) on the rear lugs studs under your wheel but over the drum. These clips would keep the drum in place during final assembly. When you change your rims from factory some of them will not have the same clearance and will compress against this clip keeping the wheel from bolting down correctly causing a vibration. Factory wheels are designed to accomadate for the clip so there is also no harm in removing the clip and leaving it off.

 

OK problem solved...........took off the infamous retainer clips and no more vibration. :thumbs:

I'm having this exact same problem on my 2012. I had them installed last Thursday and ever since I've noticed a vibration when touching the brakes. This wasn't present prior to this. I'll pull the wheels when I get home and yank those clips and see if that fixes it.

Did that fix you vibration issues? I have the EXACT same problem with my 2009 Z71 after I installed some Moto Metal 18's. I am almost to the point of taking them back off and selling. I am probably going to try this as well if it was the issue with every one else's trucks.

I pulled three wheels last night. The two front wheels had no retaining clips on the rotors but it's good to check because I'm pretty sure they are there from the factory. Mine must have been removed when I had the level installed. The rear wheels still had the retainer clips on the studs. I removed them from the driver's side rear and re-installed the wheel. I tried removing the passenger side rear but the tire shop that put the wheels on had cross threaded a lug nut and it was absolutely not coming off without snapping. I took it in this morning and they snapped off the stud and installed a new one, to do this they had to remove the retaining clip also. So they are all off. There was noticeably less vibration on the way to the shop this morning after removing them from one wheel. After they were done I felt no vibration on the drive to work even when braking. I think it worked and I'm much happier now. It does make sense that there are two retainer clips on the studs and the remaining four studs have nothing on them. It's got to be the clips keeping the wheels from having a fully flush mount.

 

On another note, the tire shop also royally torqued the lug nuts to the point where I really had to put some weight on it to break the torque. This might have been part of the problem. I usually break their torque's a few days after leaving the shop and then re-torque them by hand with my torque wrench. This way I know they are all the same and not over torqued. That can cause a vibration issue if left alone as well. Could cause the rotors to warp. Originally, not all the lug nuts had the same amount of torque, some came off like they were supposed to and usually 2 or 3 per wheel took some real muscle to knock them lose.

 

It was a good thing I checked it too. If I had gotten a flat tire on that wheel I would have been SOL because I wouldn't have been able to pull it.

Just wanted to update on mine. I took the rear wheels off and removed the retainers and retorqued to 140ftlbs as speced by gm, it worked. Absolutely NO vibration when i hit the brakes. The clearance issue listed above is correct. The moto metals did not have the relief cut into the back.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
