clunking in steering column?

I have a clunking in my steering column on my 2003 2500 hd, anyone know what this could be and how to fix it? Can i grease the steering shaft somehow? Thanks

Best to replace the intermediate steering shaft with the new, improved version. To grease your existing shaft, you still need to remove it completely from the vehicle.

There is also a plastic bearing at the bottom of the column that can cause similar problems. It's usually the ISS that's clunking

You can get aftermarket. But you can buy the AC Delco part as well from gmpartsdirect.com, ebay, etc...

Dorman # 425176 about $50 most places

AC Delco # 19153614 between $60-$75

the old shaft can be greased. You must remove it. Then grease it and re-install. GM used to make a grease kit, until they redesigned the shaft. I haven't heard of a clunking problem with the redesigned part

Probably not ISS. ISS will make noises while moving period. Not usually just when turning one direction on a gravel road
