2003 Suburban: PRND321 brightness question

I recently noticed that the brightness, or actually the lack there of, seems to have been reduced. The level is barely 'okay' when driving at night but driving during daylight it washes out and you can't really see what gear you're in unless in a shaded area.

 

Whatever the problem is, it's a fairly recent problem and I'm assuming there is no hidden menu adjustment. (The lack of brightness doesn't have anything to do with the dash switch adjustment.)

 

Any ideas what to check out or what's going bad?
