Debadging

I decided to debadge my truck this weekend and I discovered something very interesting. Because of the weather I only got the LS decals removed. As I removed them I was surprised to see how much dirt has worked its way down behind the decal. I just wanted to share that with you guys. By the way if you decide to do this, 3-M makes a very good adheasive remover that you can get at Wally World in the auto body section. It cost $5.00 a can.

Well it is done. The job took about an hour total. I used a plastic bondo spreader to get a corner of the LS decals up then just peeled them off. The badges required a different tactic. After consulting with MountaineerTom I decided on using a piece of fishing line to get the badges off. You just pull it behind the badge and work it back and forth like you were sawing wood. Once you have cut into the adheasive about an inch or so you can pull the badge off with you fingers. Becareful because the badge will break and you will have to start over again. If luck is on your side the adheasive will tape will come off the paint. If it does not come off the paint then you will have to roll it off with you fingers. That takes some time. I went over the area with Simple Green then 3-M Adheasive remover. I finished it with another swipe of Simple Green then a swipe with a damp towel. I will wash it tomorrow.

Speaking of badges I saw a black Ford Stepside with a silver cobra badge under the F150 logo.  I think it was probably a Mustang graphic.  The Lightning doesn't have anything like that on it, does it?

I thought it was kind of strange but it was a nice looking badge-just out of place on a pickup.

are there any holes left in the truck from any badges?  i have a ford ranger badge that has prongs where it was attached to the truck

is it the same type of ranger badge that is on the trucks now?  Ford badged F-100s as rangers back to I think 70 or 71, you probably just have a really old badge from the good ol' days when the badges were put on that way...

Yes fishing line is the best way to remove the badges.  The entire job is made a whole bunch easier and faster if you go out and buy a $20.00 heat gun.  Simply heat a section and use the fishing line in a sawing motion as noted in a previous post.  By using heat nothing will break.  The job was amazingly quick and easy.

I took off all of my badges and decals as well as the chrome molding on the side.

(Just a hair dryer will work fine for the decals, but it is not hot enough for the badges and moldings.)

I don't know what made me try WD 40 but is works unbelievable to remove the residue.  It truely is a multi purpose spray.

When i debadged my truck i built up some confidence by first doing the LS badges then the tailgate then the doors..

The trick i found is to use a strong thin line *fishing line* If possible dont use the heat gun i left mine out in the sun for the day and then did it *just to be safe* Once you get the badge off just clean it up with some WD 40 and then give it a quick polish over..

Main tip i can offer is dont rush it.. Take lots of time
