Filtering Media/First Pass Efficiency

Someone had asked about first pass efficiency of these two and looking around I ran across something I had not heard before.  Embedded in the article below was this:

 

" ...the media in a Mobil 1 filter only looks the same as a K&N oil filter media. The Mobil 1 filter has much higher synthetic fiber content designed to filter down to 10 micron while the K&N is designed for "more sporting" applications and filters down to only 20 microns. The Mobil 1 is focused on deep cleaning while the K&N is optimized for higher flow."

 

 Just for background on first pass, etc., I am including this info form the  Mobil 1 FAQs:

 

Q- The filter box shows single-pass efficiency and multiple-pass efficiency data. What do these numbers mean?

 

A-Oil filter efficiency in a circulating system like your engine is rated on two key factors: The size of the contaminants you want to remove, and the number of passes through the filter needed to remove these contaminants.

 

For a single-pass test, an oil sample is intentionally contaminated with glass beads in a known size (very small beads in our case). The oil is then passed through the filter and the level of contamination is measured after filtration. The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter has a single-pass efficiency of 98 percent for 10- to 20-micron contaminants vs. an average of 85 percent for conventional filters.

 

The multiple-pass test is similar to the single-pass, except oil is repeatedly passed through the filter. In a circulating system, the oil flows through the filter many times, so multiple-pass filtration is often used as the more important comparison vs. the single-pass result. The contaminant used for multiple-pass testing is a standardized test dust. The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter has a multiple-pass efficiency of 96 percent vs. an average of 82 percent for conventional oil filters.

 

In short, the higher the efficiency for a given contaminant size, the more contaminant material the filter is removing from the liquid. And the Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter does a significantly better job than conventional oil filters.

 

Q- What causes the efficiency percentage to vary between single-pass and multiple-pass tests?

 

A-The oil filter medium acts much like an air filter in your heating or cooling system at home. Contaminants are both adsorbed onto the surface of the filter medium and are physically trapped or blocked by the mat of fibers. Contaminants that are trapped on the first pass may be pushed through the medium as more liquid flows through the filter. In addition, as contaminants are trapped on the medium surface, they can block the path of additional contaminants, increasing the filter efficiency during subsequent passes.

 

Q- Why can't I get a 100-percent efficient filter?

 

A-It has to do with balancing filtration with oil flow. As you get closer to 100-percent efficiency for small contaminants, you typically decrease the ability of liquid to flow through the medium at all. In an oil filter, this could cause the bypass valve to open and send oil straight to the engine without being filtered, or it could blow a hole in the medium.

 

The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter's synthetic fibers offer a unique combination of higher efficiency and lower resistance to oil flow, so you are getting the best of both sides. Efficiency at the 96-percent level provides outstanding cleanliness and engine wear protection. Levels greater than that provide only nominal additional benefits while significantly increasing the resistance to oil flow.

Most oil filters have a rubber gasket that provides a seal between the filter and the engine filter mounting flange. The gasket on the Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter has been designed to require reduced torque during installation. You don?t have to over-tighten the filter when you put it on, and therefore the filter will be easier to remove.

 

We still recommend that you rub a small quantity of new motor oil on the gasket prior to installation. This oil film will help ensure that the gasket does not bind when the filter is tightened.

When an automobile engine is first started, the oil pump begins to circulate oil through the oil filter and the rest of the engine. Particularly during cold weather, the oil filter can be subjected to a pressure surge as the oil initially flows through the filter. Repeated pressure impulses can fatigue either the filter medium or the filter housing.

 

The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter has been designed to provide exceptional protection against failure both under steady pressure (hydrostatic pressure) and as a result of repetitive pressure impulses. The Mobil 1 filter is designed to withstand five times the normal system operating pressure (steady pressure). We do not recommend either practice. The high efficiency of the filter will ensure that your oil can provide maximum protection against engine wear, and the durability of the filter will ensure that you can go to the full extent of the mileage or time recommended in your car's owner's manual for oil and oil filter service.

Understanding the Lubrication Needs of SHOs.

Part 6 ? Update 7/08/02

 

It has been a while since we published the first five parts our "Lubrication for SHOs Study." Things have changed, and thanks to reader feedback an update is now in order.

 

First, AC Delco has discontinued the top shelf AC-UltraGuard line. They can't be found except in the remaining private stock of those folks who purchased early, purchased a bunch and hid them well. This is a singular loss because the filter cleaned down to 8 micron size even at very high flow rates. Bummer.

 

Martin Eble made the helpful observation that substituting a larger oil filter may change the bypass characteristics because the specifications on the by-pass valves may be different. Actually the valve specifications are identical, but the larger filter will have less resistance at the same flow rate and therefore it will open at a higher rpm.

 

As an example say the small oil filter starts to by pass at 2000 rpm. If a larger filter can delay that opening to say 2500 rpm that means that means an V8 owner in OD can delay opening the by pass valve from 55 mph to 69 mph. Think of a long trip, it would better to filter all the oil the whole time than by-pass much of it. You will arrive with much cleaner oil without slowing down. At say 4000+ rpm both filters will bypass most of the oil so any size advantage disappears.

 

But the choice to run the big filter in the stock location is not a simple one. A larger filter is about a ½" closer to the exhaust pipe in V8 SHOs and you risk baking your oil. Heat is the enemy of oil. How real is the problem? I don?t know, Paul Nimz made a nifty heat shield for his oil filter. He got a sheet of perforated metal and mounted it to the oil filter with clamps using non-conductive little blocks to keep the heat from transferring to the filter. A nifty mod for any size oil filter.

 

Mobil 1 changed their formulation at about the same time I first tried the large 1 quart filters. Initially the oil analysis indicated a large step increase in % oxidation and it was not clear if this was due to the change in oil formulation of filter size.  Subsequent oil analysis showed it to be a function of the new oil analysis and not of filter size. To make this clear no significant change in analysis, be it % ox or wear metals can be attributed to filter size for better or worse using either size filter.

 

In this test Mobil 1 5w-30 was changed with filter every 5000 miles on a V8 SHO. Heat was a concern because of the proximity of the filter to a exhaust down pipe.  The significant concern remains that using the larger filter on engine that calls for the smaller one will void factory warranty. Using the smaller filter for an engine that calls for the larger filter is never recommended.

 

The big issue - at least for V8 owners - is that the wrong size oil filter will void any warranties. Say Ford in their immense charity does a cam recall or compensates those with welded or pinned cams. - No small filter, no bucks. Say you have the last V8 SHO on ESP, cam goes and you have a big filter. Would Ford use that to deny a $10,000 warranty claim? In a 1/10,000 of a NY second. Fact is don?t ever let a dealership service department see your car with the wrong size oil filter. Suffice it say if you choose to run an "unauthorized" big oil filter don?t document it well and resolve to make it a secret you take to your grave.

 

One other thing I learned is the media in a Mobil 1 filter only looks the same as a K&N oil filter media. The Mobil 1 filter has much higher synthetic fiber content designed to filter down to 10 micron while the K&N is designed for "more sporting" applications and filters down to only 20 microns. The Mobil 1 is focused on deep cleaning while the K&N is optimized for higher flow.

 

Say you have a small block Chevy, all bearing clearances are at least 60 microns, so you would need (3) 20 micron to line up just perfectly to bridge across the lubrication layer and scratch a bearing surface. Unless you use that engine in truck pulls or off road that should never happen. But the bearing clearances in a V6 SHO are all about 40 microns and V8 main bearings are 20 micron, V8 cam bearings are 40 micron. So bypassing 20-micron size particles is a whole lot less attractive with a V8 SHO than either a V6 SHO or small block Chevy. In theory one could run the K&N when they know they will be running higher rpm because the lower pressure drop across the media will in effect delay by-pass opening and improve the quantity of oil. It may work for the V6, but it would be a risk with the V8, so I can no longer recommend the K&N oil filter for year round use with the V8 SHO motor - save it for track use when full flow is critical.

 

One last pearl from my research: one compelling argument for the big one-quart filter is its dirt capacity. My 4x4 used to have a 12" diameter by 6" tall truck filter. That filter will hold a whole lot of dirt before airflow was effected. In the same way a 1-quart filter with twice the media should hold about twice the dirt as a filter half that size. Fact is - exception being off road events like Pikes Peak hill climb, some of which is not paved - the small oil filter will never be near capacity for normal street-highway use and recommended change intervals. If the small filter has ¼ dirt load when changed and the big filter has 1/8 load what will the 7/8 capacity not used benefit an owner? If you do a lot of driving in dusty areas the big filter may be best for a very few owners, otherwise the small filter is preferable.

 

The last man standing, at this point, is the Mobil 1, we shall morn the loss or the UltraGuard filters.

I 've never seen that information before. I use Mobile one in my Silverado and will use the Mobil 1 oil filter from now on also.

    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
