Mystery Whine

Ive got an 02 silverado, 5.3 ext cab 4wd, its got 130k, and its got a loud whine constantly, ive read a lot of posts about different whines, tried even youtubing some to see if the sound was similar, but nothing was matching up, i know its not the p/s pump or alternator, took accessory drive belt off and cranked her up and it was still there. The sound is a high pitched, and heard louder on the passenger side of the motor. It also gets louder the higher the rpms, in all gears (including park and neutral) i work indirectly for a ford dealership and they apparantly dont know head from hind because they just started naming parts to replace. If anybody could help it would be great, otherwise ill be slowly replacing things one by one untill its gone, even if it eventually means everything

Definately remove the AC belt, but if it sounds like a pump whine it could be your tranny pump. Put it in gear, and then reverse (changes pump pressures) to see if the sound changes.

I had an '03 that had a terrible AC whine. It started about a year after I bought it new and lasted until the day I traded it this year. I couldn't get the dealer to do anything about it when the whine started but it never failed in 10 years.

It was whining when I bought it, took my exhaust off before the stock muffler and it wasn't as noticeable, put new exhaust on and couldn't stand it anymore,

Possibly a bad tensioner or bearing. My 99 had that problem and it was super annoying. Costs about 30 bucks for a new one, and its not hard to replace. Only two bolts after you drop the plastic in front of the skid plate.

Bad tensioner sounds about right I think, I didn't have the right tool to turn it so I figured I'd try to muscle it, put my hand on it and it moved real easy

Does it whine all the time?

Mine only whined when the compressor was on. Not so bothersome in the winter until I turned on the defrost.

All the time, the belt is off now though so it's not doing it now, but I have to figure out what it is, preferably before summer hits again

Possibly the pulley on the tensioner. It takes a15mm wrench to loosen the tensioner and I believe a 10mm socket with a 6inch extension and a swivel head made things much easier. Hope it's not a compressor bearing, just harder to fix.
