Extended Cab Finicky Door Latch Resulting in Wind Noise

Recommended Posts

Anyone have issues with door latches not creating a full seal on their extended cab trucks? My passenger side one is getting a little annoying. If the door isn't closed really hard, it doesn't make a tight seal. This results in wind noise while driving over 45mph. This just started happening about a week ago.

I ruled out the window regulator because the noise will go away when the doors are shut just right and there isn't play in the window. Shutting the doors really hard doesn't always remedy the issue. I'm wondering if moving the latch vertically a little bit might make for a tighter latch and seal. There are no indications that the door isn't sealing correctly otherwise (ie: neither door sticks out, they both visibly sit flush with the side of the truck, no water or condensation inside).

Any advice? It looks like there are (3) latching points. (2) on the rear door to the cab and one for the front door to the rear. The sound seems to be coming from the front door. Would it be worth playing with that latch? Or would I be better off just getting a new moulding seal for the door (mine looks to be in very good condition with no deterioration or tears).

Thanks in advance.

Is this a pre 2007 truck? I had this issue and it was my rear window. Had the latch removed and sealed shut and no more noise.

How? I have been wanting to do that.

My body shop did it for me, I wasn't the first they've done by any means. They removed the window completely and put some kind of glue/sealant around the seal, then taped the window in place to let it dry. You can't even see it from inside or outside the truck. With rear vents I decided a non leaking, quiet, permanently shut window would be nice. They're pretty much useless anyways.

Hmmm... that's a good idea as well. I didn't think about those rear windows and how they can affect this. Will check them this evening and see if I can find a solution.

I shut the doors carefully by hand prior to leaving work tonight. No noise whatsoever. The issue is definitely the latch on one of the doors. I'm going to move the front door latch a little bit inward to allow that door to secure closer to the gasket. That will hopefully fix the issue.

Maybe. My hypothesis is that the slamming of the rear door reseats the window seal somehow. Zane pointed out some interesting things while roding in my back seat when we were in Vegas. His windows roll down and his doors open 170 degrees. The last one was a gripe in a parking lot.

I was able to do this yesterday. Worked great. The door sits better now and no more having to be stupid careful about how it is shut.
