Looking at installing new Pioneer HU in 03 Silverado

Thanks for you thoughts on all that, I aggree with you. I have been looking at Navs and am getting the impression that they are Navs first and good stereo head units second. Which is not what I am looking for. I want a very good stereo and CD player with options of playing Pandora, IHeart and HD and "possibly" Sirius and a back up camera. I have about a 40% hearing loss so a good amp and speakers are a must. I could not believe the sound of the factory Bose in my new to me 03 Crew Cab over the unit in my old 96 club cab. In fact the Bose is the best sound I have heard since my hearing loss about 5 years ago. I can actually understand the lyrics. I guess I may be one of the last on the planet to still be using a little flip out cell phone, so maybe this is a good time to upgrade to a Smart Phone. If that is the case and if with the use of a Smart Phone I can get all my wish list items, I suppose we are back to going with the AVH 5500/5600 as originally planned. I say the 5500/5600 because I travel all over the US and suspect I could find some good HD stations as I go. Also, I will be installing a camper shell on the Crew Cab bed so a decent back up camera is a must. So guys, again thanks so much for following thru this with me. Let me pull together another list and see where I am with the best fit components and budget.

I almost hate to throw this out, but any recommendations as to which new "smartphone" to buy in consideration of what it will be used for here.

edit) keep in mind this is all for an 03, I don't think an OGM-1 is even an option for an 03 even if I was still considering a navi. That's the other reason I am shying away from navis, the selection seemed to be limited.

edit2) it appears that at some point between when we first started this discussion and now that Crutchfield has updated their product line and now the 5500 is now called the 5600 and the 4500 is now the 4600 etc. The 5600 at $499 gives you HD tuning and Sirius capability. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130X560BHS/Pioneer-AVH-X5600BHS.html

For the Pioneer, I think the iPhone 4s works the best and has the easiest/best integration. You can use the best apps and the phone can be had for free or $99 if you upgrade on something like Verizon. Only requires the cable which you can get on ebay for a lot less than Crutchfield. Android can be made to work too with the CD-ML100 but I think it is only for certain phones.

Total for all items currently planned 2/15 (underlined)...................... $708.00

* For Consideration

I anticipate continuing to play a LOT of 300+ CD's. This unit although slightly smaller in screen size (7" / 6.1") it is a top load CD so does not require the front of the touch screen to flip down every time a CD is changed like the 5600 unit. IE more convenient and less potential problem with the mechanical screen, Other than that it almost identical to the 5600 unit, and it is $83 cheaper as it includes Crutchfields installation kit ($15) and antenna adpter ($10)

Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS 6.1" $299.00 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130X350BHS/Pioneer-AVH-X3500BHS.html?showAll=N&search=Pioneer_AVH-X3500BHS&skipvs=T

Yea Chris but not as bad as I thought it might be. Still up in the air is whether to purchase an iPhone 5 or 4. Since I currently don't have either and my current AT&T flip phone contract runs out in March, my wife is asking why not go with the latest ie 5. Also my iPod died a year or so ago and wondering if I should go with buying another or just storing iTunes etc on my iPhone. sheeze all this is too much like WORK

thanks guys for your continued help here. there's bound to be some good karma being generated by it!!

I hate iphones but if youre going to do it go with the 5s. It will cost you $200 but hell you will be current a little longer than if you got the 4s

Chris, I am not really looking forward to giving up my simple little flip phone and entering the world of iPhones as all this new day technology talk is Greek to me. In fact it is going to be a challenge just to first install this system myself and secondly figure out how to operate it, specially relative to using iPhone apps etc etc. But America didn't get to the moon first by worrying that it couldn't be done so I am going to do it, even if it blow's a few fuses in this old farts brain.

MrEarl,

The x3500bhs is what I have and it works great. I do not listen to a lot of CDs, but it would alleviate some of the potential mechanical problems. You may also want to look at the avh-x3600bhs which is this year's model. I got my refurb x3500bhs on ebay which initially had a problem, but seller replaced and it has worked great ever since. As far a iPhone 4s or 5, I still recommend 4s. It only requires the CD-IU201S and does not require the additional hookups. You also lose some apps by using the iPhone 5/s and you can do a comparison and see all apps at http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/AppRadio.

As for install kit, you want the American International one from Crutchfield. I do not think the Pioneer one will fit right and is not needed. For your interface, I would spend a little more and go with the RP5-GM11 (which includes antenna adapter). I have the RP5-GM31 for my 09. It is a little more customizable, is a better integration, and it works great. Good luck with the build. Let us know how it all comes out!

went to the phone store today and ended up going with the iPhone 5S.

Decided not to go with Sirius XM and put money toward a new iPod.

Everything looks good. I do not think you will be disappointed with skipping SiriusXM. I was a religious listener until I ditched it for the phone apps. Won't go back either. If nothing else, you should be able to use the SiriusXM app and listen through the phone and radio.

Everything ordered. All from Crutchfield except for parking brake by-pass/overide. Could have saved maybe 20-30 bucks had I ordered from various other vendors (eBay, Amazon etc) but hopefully the customer/technical assistance when I get the dash opened up and pose the question to myself of WTF have I done will be well worth the extra $$.

THANKS guys for all your help. I will likely start another thread of the actual install, so you can bet you haven't heard the last from MrE.
